Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.
I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.
Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.
7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

Question: What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Activity: Please reply to 3 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@Heather225
I think if I as a 7 Cups leader have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, that would not only impact my member interactions but it will also affect my interactions with my fellow listeners.
- If I as a 7 Cups leader had too low expectations, it would affect the community in that they would not be able to reach their full potential which would make it hard for them to have successful communication with those who need someone efficient to listen to them. It would affect how I work with my fellow leaders in that they will not see me as someone deserving of the position.
- If I as a 7 Cups leader had too little warmth, it would affect the community in that my fellow listeners will not feel supported and they may not come to me if they need help. It would affect how I work with my fellow leaders in that it would be hard for us to build a connection with each other.
@NoelleListens
I agree with you here. If we have an imbalance that isn't good for anyone. Your doing a great job keep it up!!
If I have an imbalance of expectations that would be a dangerous thing not only for the community but for myself and fellow leaders also. Us leaders have a great reward but also risk on this site because we are here to listen and help the members with what they are going through. If I had a low expectation or warmth that means that I’m not really listening to the member and helping them or the opposite with a listener if they need help. Having an imbalance impacts everyone.
@glowingSoul93 you are right. Having an imbalance in both impacts everyone in a negative way.
@glowingSoul93
I agree Soul! It has an impact on everyone, fellow peers and members alike!
@Heather225
- I think that having too low of expectations or too little warmth will impact the community in the sense that I won’t be able to serve others in the way they may need to be served. Additionally, I will not be able to perform in a way that helps me to help others.
- I think that having too low of expectations or too little warm will impact my fellow leaders in the sense that I will find myself being isolated and not able to be there for my team; additionally, I may not be able to work in an environment that brings together a sense of unity and understanding.
@magicmango26 You are absolutely right.
@magicmango26
You are absolutely right I think that high expectation and warmth fosters a better team spirit as well.
@magicmango26
Well said.
@magicmango26
I really like that you mentioned isolation, as I haven't even thought of that. But you are absolutely right!
Question: What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Answer: I think if I have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, This community and I will suffer. Because high expectations with little warmth will make this community rule-oriented and Low expectations with high warmth will make us struggle because we would not be that effective. I would feel loved but having the sense of not doing so great would make me struggle and negatively impact my work with my fellow leaders. And I think if we listeners struggle, the whole community would struggle because members come here for help, and if we are not able to provide it effectively, it would have a negative impact on everyone.
@Zarram77 I couldn't agree more with you! Balancing is something that we all should do!
@Zarram77
No one likes to struggle, that is why as leaders we have to set a good pace, for a good ripple effect.
@Zarram77
Absolutely, even if we need to take self-care breaks, we also need to be aware of how our struggling can have downstream effects.
What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
I feel like if I have low expectations or too little warmth I won't do the best of my capability to help our community. I won't be willing to spread my help and positivity around and of course, I will get distracted from my main goal (to make this community a safer and more enjoyable environment for old and new members-listeners). 2) Also, by having little expectations I won't be able to improve and also help my fellow leaders. I won't be excited to impact and work with my fellow leaders and I won't be able to grow as a leader or help others to improve. Finally, by having little warmth and expectations I won't complete tasks through succession. With that said, having little expectations and warmth can lead to distraction from our goals and not help the community and our fellow leaders.
@Heather225
Question: What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Answer:I am going to talk about this issue in another way. I think that having high expectation and warmth increases team spirit. the more the expectation is there, there will be a sense of urgency in the work which inturn will help others in knowing how to ask for help when needed. The help in turn will increase team dynamics and bring about a sense of belonging and warmth in the team. Now going back to the question if there is a lowere sense of expectations every one might think that they can achieve goals on their own and need no help. Individualistic approach will start and kill team spirit and there will be competition and no warmth.
@incrediblelistener78 100%. High effort rubs off on others
@TheRusticMystic74
i agree with the domino effect you stated here
@TheRusticMystic74
Agreed! As they say, a smile is contagious.
@TheRusticMystic74
You have a different approach to the question which I totally agree with. Lowering the bar may indeed stop teamwork from happening at all. It is a great point.
@Heather225
What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I think as a 7 Cups leader, if I have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, I will not be able to complete tasks at hand. Eventually, over a period, I will feel frustrated and will struggle, which can lead to feeling unmotivated.
How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community,
I think having too low of expectations or too little warmth will impact the community by showing that I am inconsistent with my work which can lead to me being unreliable and at the end of the day, unprofessional.
and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
This will impact how I work with my fellow leaders by showing that I cannot be accountable for my work and it can affect later opportunities, seeing that I cannot get the present work completed.
@KBeauty12 love it, consistency is definitely key
@KBeauty12
I looked at it exactly the same way. You're totally right. If you're not invested then overtime the work will start to wear you down.
@KBeauty12
Yes! These things not only have an impact on our current reliability, but also on our future opportunities. Well said!
As a leader, falling short in either category will have a negative impact on those around you. It's important to set an example, and if you're lackluster in any one area, the people you inspire will follow. This will lead to a negative impact on both the community and how we work with other leaders.
@Dan76
Agreed dan!
@Heather225
too little expectations will lead to:
1. instead of an "us against the world" sort of mentality it would be a "me against the world" mentality, and that's a very discouraging mentality to have, because any and all setbacks you face would feel as though they're a personal responsibility.
2. assuming there is high warmth but low expectations, a comfort circle will be created. there is no motivation or reason to move beyond it, because the warmth is readily accessible without one doing anything. in a way, warmth has to respond to intention. if there isn't an intention to strive towards achieving higher expectations then warmth beyond the threshold of maintaining one's mental health would frankly be useless.
the community:
how i work with fellow leaders:
1. a general lack of urgency in the pacing of the group work, which would lead to a lack of efficiency and the standard would not be upheld
2. the team spirit would be basically nonexistent: nobody expects anything from each other, so it is in a sense not seeing each other as capable. without a team spirit enthusiasm would also be difficult to foster.
@Elise849
Nobody is comfortable backed up in a corner, with the mindset of "forced to fight out".
Also a comfort circle is also agreed with. Nice points Elise, very well put.@Elise849
I think you make some really good points. If there is little to no incentives, then people are less likely to be productive.
@Heather225

The 7 cups community, I'd assume in the same way. As well working with fellow leaders. Good vibes, Leads to a happy workplace, and thus leads to great efficiency/production.
I agree with you 100%. A good balance of the two would lead to a happy workplace and great efficiency/production.
Morale is so important for creative problem solving, which we absolutely need as listeners (or anyone else working in the mental health space).
