Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.
I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.
Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.
7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
✒️ Please reply to at least 1 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
A leader with expectations too high may set unachievable goals for individuals, resulting in them going against the leader. However in contrast high warmth may not provide enough motivation for the individuals and could lead to the work not being done.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Effects on the Community
Low Expectations: People may grow comfortable, uninspired, or disengaged if expectations are set too low. In the community, a lack of challenge can hinder development, creativity, and accountability.
Lack of Warmth: In the absence of warmth, the community could feel abandoned or alienated. It can be difficult for people to work together or feel appreciated in a chilly or impersonal setting since it can cause loneliness, low morale, and a lack of trust.
Effect on Collaborating with Other Leaders
Low Expectations: When leaders have low expectations, they may not be as ambitious or make as much progress. Additionally, it can foster a culture that tolerates mediocrity, which would diminish effectiveness all around.
Lack of Warmth: Leader-to-leader interactions may turn transactional instead of cooperative in the absence of warmth. This may impede collaboration, candid dialogue, and the ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive way

@lovelyBlossom5344 Hey, reading your post makes me realize it's true if one person acts in a certain manner than everyone else would start to mimic it. You make some pretty valid points here.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
The most obvious outcome will be a poor performance for the people we are suppose to help. The system of high expectations and high warmth is valuable in an emotionally charged environment. If we do not conduct ourselves in the best manner with sincerity to those in need. Then we aren't helping anyone.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Community: Our community needs emotionally capable people to listen. That failure alone will lead to lack of trust and avoidance from those in need.
Fellow Leaders: Nobody wants to work with someone who can't be a team player or lacks care or sympathy for the people they work with. So low expectations and low warmth gets you dismissed from your fellow leader's circle of trust.

Hi @SunnyCthulhu !
I agree. Balancing high expectations and warmth is crucial. An imbalance can lead to poor performance and lack of trust. Low expectations and warmth can create complacency and a toxic environment, impacting both the community and team dynamics negatively.

@FrenchToast ✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? Having high expectations with having a high warmth helps a lot and encourages to achieve those expectations. When someone has low warmth but high expectations it may come as rude, cold, disincouraging and toxic criticism.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders? Having too low expectations does not encourage us to improve which leads to not have our best potential as leaders and to be left unsatisfied. Too little warmth makes a community an unsetting and toxic space.

@jaboo Wait my reading comprehension left me. I forgot to say about the relationship with other leaders 🥲
Having too little warmth makes a toxic environment between peers and leaders (which should be an encouraging and inspirational environment). Having too low expectations may lead to extreme comparison when seeing other leaders.
