Iberian Lynx - the world's most endangered cat

There are four species of lynx: the Bobcat, Canadian Lynx, Eurasian Lynx and Iberian Lynx. Although the bobcat, Canadian and Eurasian Lynx are all listed as least concern, the Iberian lynx is the world's most endangered feline species - there are fewer Iberian lynx’s in the wild than there are Snow Leopards or Sumatran Tigers (only the Amur Leopard, a subspecies of leopard, has fewer individuals left in the wild).

The Iberian lynx population in the wild has declined by over 80% in the past 20 years alone. In the 1960s, there were around 3,000 living in the wild, by 2000 there were less than 400, where the population has drastically declined to just two subpopulations in Andalusia, south west Spain.

They live in high altitude shrubland, and as their name suggests, the Iberian lynx was once widespread across the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).

The Iberian lynx has a tawny coat with dark spots, long legs, a short tail, and tufts of hair at the end of their ears. They have a distinctive 'beard' around their face, and are roughly half the size of the Eurasian lynx.

Just like domestic cats, cheetahs, and puma, lynx can purr! They have a rigid set of delicate bones (called hyoid bones) that supports the larynx and the tongue. The vibration of the larynx causes the hyoid bones to vibrate to produce a purr. However, in big cats, tough cartilage runs up the hyoid bones to the skull, giving the larynx enough flexibility to produce a roar, but not a purr.

Here is a pic of my cat, Simba 🐯 He passed away a couple of years ago, but he was my childhood kitten so I still miss him 🐆💖
