Foodie Group- Share your favourite Holiday Dishes!

fruityflamingo November 25th, 2015

Hello Foodies! How are you all ? :)

Because we are coming up to the Holiday season, I thought it would be great to start a thread where we could share our favourite holiday dishes! We had a few suggestions on our last forum thread which I will post here as well.

We would love to hear about your favourite holiday recipes/foods and what they mean to you .. or any stories or memories you have associated with them. :)

The focus here is more on holidays and love, rather than one particular holiday or celebration, but feel free to share what the holidays mean to you.

Can't wait to hear your stories and try your recipes! - fruityflamingo :D

Here is @wondefulMagic99 's favourite Christmas recipe- Pyrizhky, or cabbage buns!

Here's what @wonderfulMagic99 said:

Christmas is coming up and we've recently had a huge dumping of snow so it looks like Christmas here. I plan on making these soon, they are one of my favourites!

Here is @Holie 's favourite holiday dish - Rocciata!

This is what @Holie had to say:

This is one of my favourite Christmas cake, well, this is one of the possible versions. It's similar to strudel. Sorry but the recipes is written only in italian! I can translate it if you want

During Christmas time, my family buys the most amazing ham from the grocery store. When ever I smell its wonderful aroma or taste it, I think of every time my family is together. Christmas is a time where I get to just sit down with my family and enjoy their company and share such a special time with the people I love. <3

@Brightheart993 - thanks so much for sharing! My family does something similar as well with the ham... I love how each ham is prepared... and how sometimes there is a tradition on how to cut it and who gets the first taste :). When I was little, my grandparents would alternate each year of who got to slice the first slice, and who got to taste it first! I remember the years I got to taste it first.. it was amazing!

@fruityflamingo That sounds like a great tradition! I may have to think about maybe trying that in our family for Christmas Eve :D

@CaringJoy - All of those dishes sound delicious! I've never had shrimp etouffe and dirty rice cajun style, can you describe what they are? I am also a big fan of lamp chops :)

Your desserts also look amazing - I'm really curious about the sweet potato pie, I think I'll need to try that out! And vanilla icecream is always great!

Thanks for sharing!

@fruityflamingo - Thanks, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Shrimp Étouffée can be made with any shellfish such as crab, shrimp or crawfish. A sauce is made from a light or blond roux, seasoned, and simmered with the seafood.

Cajun dirty rice is white rice which gets a "dirty" color from being cooked with small pieces of chicken liver or giblets, green bell pepper, celery and onions and spiced with cayenne and black pepper. Parsley and/or chopped green onions are common garnishes. Dirty rice is most common in the Creole regions of Louisiana, USA.

@CaringJoy - Ooh me too! That sounds incredible.. I'm not normally a huge fan of seafood but I would love to try that!

The Cajun dirty rice also sounds like a real mixture of flavours... That also sounds like a new taste sensation! One day when I go travelling overseas I'll have to hunt down a place to try it :D
