I just put my dog down
Hello everyone,
I had to put my collie down last week. He was 13 and had lost almost all of his mind. He didn’t know where he was or who I was most days. His vet said there was nothing else to be done. I had my equine vet come out and do it at home. She sedated him first so he just fell asleep in his bed before she gave him the shot. I’ve had other dogs but they’ve all died naturally.
i feel a little like a dog murderer and don’t ever want another dog. That was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m just curious about how everyone else has gotten over this feeling.
@sensitivePond7614 I hope your mind lets your heart realise that you did all that you could and this was the only way. There is mercy in your action, so much love and concern for your dog<3 You did what you had to, you did your best for your dog and he knows it, they always do.
I guess with time we learn to deal with the burden of guilt, there's always going to be some kind of responsibility we feel when such decision is placed upon us. If it helps, tell your dog all that you need to, ask for forgiveness ~ I'm not saying that there is something to ask forgiveness for but if that helps your heart feel a bit lighter then do it. It's very understandable to feel this way and I hope that you can find some peace again.
@sensitivePond7614 I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog. I've always had to have them put down and I've often felt the same way, like a dog murderer. Other times I've felt like I may have waited to long at times and caused them some suffering in my inability to let them go. It's a very hard choice to have to make. Either way it still hurts.
My last dog also had dementia and didn't always know where she was. She would get lost in the house she spent her whole life in. It's painful to watch them get worse and worse and to hear that there's nothing else the vet can do, our choices are very limited. It got to the point that I was afraid to leave her alone and would line up sitters for her. I've heard horror stories of the things that can happen if they're unsupervised. Sitters were okay short term, not so much long term.
