What principles should we follow for an inclusive group support experience?

Hope October 10th, 2022

Hi everyone! I hope you are well. Every space has some rules to ensure that the people who participate in it can make the most of it. We have our group support rules that help maintain a supportive environment. What about some additional things we should consider when we step into a room, are there things one can follow to make the room better?

Think of a room you wish to be in

  • What kind of people frequent that room?

  • What kind of conversations happen there?

@Hope

Great prompt, it's more comfortable to be in rooms that are inclusive, welcoming, moderately-paced (the chat pace lol, not too fast and not barren either), with kind, respectful, supportive conversations taking place, where people follow chatroom guidelines, and are acknowledging that everyone else is too a human, behind the screen, having the least bit of humanity, humility, decency for everyone to have their "space" yet feel involved, in a compassionate, empathetic, thoughtful manner.

It always helps to be kind, considerate and patient. ❀

I appreciate some of the insights shared in this post, by the community, for the community.

I like that I think a room that is kind is a room that is welcoming!

Good point, following chatroom guidelines is definitely important. We might feel too homey that we often disregard some guidelines especially in structured support room. Then when we got reminder, we felt people were being strict, but the thing is, the guidelines are there for a reason. 'Everyone else is too a human' nicely said, we need to ensure the supportive atmosphere for every single one in the room.

@VictoriaLove7 Exactly. Not an uncommon thing that moderators receive a lot of criticism for well, just doing their job lol, of reminding chatroom rules and ensuring a room is welcoming, inclusive, supportive and comfortable for everyone, but like you said, if everyone remembers to follow guidelines, and respect the Mods for their presence in the room, it'll be a much better experience for all, I feel.

Glad you're on the same page, thankyou for being such a warm and kind presence in the rooms! ❀

All sorts of people and from all over the globe. Everyone genuinely feels welcome because they are welcome. The room is filled with warmth, and we're all here in good faith. Our goal is to offer and receive encouragement and support. Some might have a stronger need than others, but this changes depending on the circumstances, and there's definitely a vibe of give and take for all. We're here to learn. We're here to grow. We're here to help and be helped.

Encouragement and support! I like that combination, I think both together help people who are a bit hesitant to try it out

@Hope I would like if the lurkers engage more in talking and participate in the group chats

  • What kind of people frequent that room?

    All the listeners as they are quiet fun. As Sun mentioned, moderate flowing chats ( 10 people participating) would be fun as we can focus on the answers and have fun conversations

  • What kind of conversations happen there?

    Either related to listening, or fun facts. Fun ice breakers, games would be funnn

I like being in a room where people are inclusive and appropriate [clean jokes πŸ˜…], respectful and kind as it feels safe and comfortable

@Hope

Rooms were all participants feel involved and welcomed. Everyone should get the idea , topics of discussion and chat should be at moderate pace. Even when rooms are open for normal chats for members/listeners mostly people who know eachother make group and chat about a topic which other person entering doesn't know . So they feel unwelcomed and leave the room. As people all over the globe participate so it should be a room for everyone to feel involved.

Sometimes there are misunderstandings due to language differences. If possible we can avoid it like ask others what they want to say and then give them warning or report their reply.

I am saying this because I got reported for normal reply in the room due to some misunderstanding which I don't know. So sometimes I avoid participating in rooms. Sorry for saying this here but its true.

A structured group support room where there are guidelines, to ensure every gets the support they need. The conversation would be supportive kinds, welcoming everyone, and we might need to refrain from creating a 'small group' in the group where some regulars might have known each other. Because some others who may not know them well may feel excluded.

So, being inclusive is very important in a support room. Try to include everyone in the conversation. If we would like to have light convo only with those we know well there is MCR for that purpose.

@Hope

It is important to create an inclusive and supportive environment in a group setting by recognizing and respecting the diversity of individuals in the group. By encouraging active listening, open communication, and creating a safe and non-judgmental space. We could also ensure that all members feel included and welcome, regardless of their background or identity. Empathy and understanding towards others should be fostered, and positive reinforcement and encouragement should be provided to build self-esteem and boost morale. Group members should be encouraged to adopt a growth mindset and to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. The group should empower individuals to take control of their own lives and to make positive changes. Kindness and compassion should also be practiced and modeled among group members.
