Why is mental illness still considered "taboo"?

IndigoRoses June 1st, 2016

It really frustrates me that sometimes the people who need to talk to others the most are unable to because they live in fear of being judged or ridiculed. Why do we still have stigma surrounding mental health difficulties?

@IndigoRoses oh as an addition. Depending on the belief system and how deep the belief and how radical the belief the person could see the mental illness as a demon or some other form of possession. Especially the ones with personality disorders or straight up schizophrenia.

Because we consider ourselves to be superior to everything and therefore flawless to detriment.

It is still Taboo because people refuse to believe it is there. There are really no symptoms sometimes until it is too late and they are mourning of a loss of someone or grieving. People don't try and figure out why this happens when a person is diagnosed with a mental Illness. Mental Illnesses are becoming more and more diagnosed each day,and we still don't know why they are what they are. People just pretend it isn't there because they don't have the illness and it isn't happening to them.

@IndigoRoses I think it might have to do with misconceptions and stigma.

Thank you for all the insightful responses! I had my own idea about why mental illness might still be taboo, but I really wanted to hear other perspectives.

Because a lot of the population doesn't understand it, and to them it's not "normal ", so people won't talk about what they don't really understand

Mental illness is not well understood by people who have not experienced it. I've found that people simply won't believe something that they have not felt themselves. So, people will tell you to "get over it" and some people will even think that you are "crazy" and refuse to educate themselves instead of judging.

I think it's hard for people to admit they have a problem. I think sometimes than they think that means they are admitting they are weak. Even though battling a mental illness everyday is one of the toughest battles you can fight. I mean you're literally fighting with your own mind everyday. That's exhausting. ...

People who suffer this horrible illness should never be afraid to admit what they have. I was once told I had 2 faces the face for the people on the out side and a face for when no one was there! I don't hide my illness Infact I let as many people as possible what this illness does and what you can't see from the outside what goes on in the inside!! Then you get the ones saying give yourself a shake for! if I thought that would help I would not being making this post!!
