Happy Mental Health Month. There aren't a lot of places or spaces to discuss suicide. I've noticed suicide is a topic that is often taboo even on mental health websites, in MH spaces, and I recently found out that this taboo and stigma even hinders research on suicide. I've seen the really dangerous myth making the rounds again lately that discussing suicide increases suicidal ideation, so I needed to share this information.
Preventing discussion of suicide actually is what increases suicide rates, increases the rate of those struggling alone, and it also hinders important suicide research which could help people hurting.

"A review of the recent literature (PsycINFO and Ovid Medline) revealed a total of 13 papers published between 2001 and 2013 that have examined whether asking about suicide induces suicidal ideation. Conducted using samples of both adolescents and adults and in general and at-risk populations, none found a statistically significant increase in suicidal ideation in participants as a result of being asked about their suicidal thoughts." -
