Imagination doesn’t work the way I thought and maybe doesn’t work the way you thought either

If you close your eyes and imagine something do you see a “photograph” of it in your mind? I don’t. I’m in the roughly 2.0% of people who don’t have a visual imagination. I imagine in concepts. I had no idea other people could actually “see” what they imagined.

For me it’s not a big deal that I have aphantasia. It’s not uncommon for those of us that have it not to know we have it. Most people who don’t have probably never imagined there were people like me. I think it’s fascinating.

@PineTreeTree This is so interesting! Thank you for bringing this up. So all sensory imagination is a spectrum? I guess I'm not surprised, since spectrums seem to be the nature of most things but STILL this is so cool.

So, you think in concepts without the barest whiff of even visual movement attached to imagination? there isn't the faintest motion movie you create in your head? Do you think you also dream in concepts? How are your other sensory imaginations- like how well do you imagine taste or sound or touch?

I found out that I have a robust sensory imagination except I can't visualize familiar faces- so even visual imagination can vary in degrees of subject specificity. I absolutely love thinking about all this stuff- because the human conscious experience is so wonderfully bizarre isn't it?

@determinedSea4370 Well I don’t know about other senses and imagination. I’d be shocked if someone can imagine taste and actually taste something or imagine sound and actually hear it. I have memory of what things taste and sound like but I don’t actually taste them or hear them just by imagining them. How luck someone would be to have perfect taste imagination. They could imagine junk food and never  eat it and get fat lol. Perfect music imagination? Unsubscribe from Spotify 😂

I dream in “movie” form but no imagined movies when awake. Closing my eyes I see black and white randomness that can maybe, sometimes resemble the 2-d shape of what I’m imagining if I try but it quickly morphs into some other black blob. I could certainly draw any imagined object (if I could draw well) as a perfect 3-d object. So when I say “concept” it sounds like I could only describe it with words.  I think maybe it’s more like I have all the data to project an object on the movie screen but I just don’t have the screen. Other people have a screen but their projector lens has more or less focus with some people having almost perfect 1080p resolution and others having a poorly focused projector.

@PineTreeTree I mean...I can imagine tasting the essence of chocolate or the essence of smelling cinnamon- that's what I mean by imagining and I think this kind of vague sensory imagination is common in most people. It certainly would be unusual to ACTUALLY taste or smell something imagined lol. I can tell you that music imagination hits me with earworms like 'Good Luck Babe' running through my head for the past fifteen minutes lol. And the fact that words like 'earworm' exists in several languages (english and the same concept in german) means imagining songs to such a realistic degree that they get repetative and annoying must be pretty common. The way you dream sounds so interesting and I really like the projector and screen analogy you brought up.

@determinedSea4370 and yeah, our consciousness is really fascinating and bizarre. It’s cool learning that we don’t all have the same conscious experience.
