The family that you are not related to!

When my brother was in University, in the same Major he studied, him and another student became best friends. All these years, they have stayed in contact, on he married and moved to the States. Recently, my brother has offered to have him help at his company by contract and working remotely. Anyways, this friend, has an older sister, whom I was lucky to get to know when they were both still studying. With her, I call her my Big Sister. Although our last names are the same (a common last name for Chinese people), no relationship by blood, but I see her as my older sister as well.

To have an older brother myself, I've always wanted to have an older sister too. So, she has become that older sister. She's visiting next month, bringing her husband (his first time to Canada), and we'll most likely be meeting at least once. Last time when she visited, we met twice. Once along with my brother and another friend, and the second time was just the two of us. Before COVID, we mailed each other handwritten letters, almost like pen pals, but we haven't resumed that since. But she still sends me little gifts for my birthday and during Christmas.

I'm thinking maybe I should resume the letter-writing again. Just to stay in touch, but I find that the context of our letters, it's mostly me telling her about things going on in my life, but with her letters, she doesn't really share much about her life. She's nearly 12 years older than I, so maybe she feels that she can't really share much about her life with me. I tried asking her when her birthday is, but she doesn't reveal it, otherwise, I'd be more than happy to mail her birthday gifts too.

Anyways, she is like my older sister. My additional family member aside my immediate family (parents + older brother).
