Caring for an elderly parent with mental health difficulties

Cradlehag93 November 4th, 2022

Hello,

I am new here, and have joined to hopefully find support in managing my own responses to caring for my elderly mother - who I have only just realised has had lifelong mental health difficulties.

I have found myself swept onto an emotional rollercoaster of my mother's feelings, which don't really belong to me.

It's also difficult because I am an only child with no nearby family. My Mum's health kept us fairly isolated from family as I was growing up. She is also a hoarder.

I am struggling with her move into permanent residential care, and being the only one dealing with everything , especially trying to clear the property for sale.

I don't live near the property, and work almost full time and have three young children. It has become to feel like a lot to deal with alone.

@Cradlehag93 Hi there! I am so sorry to read about your mother, I do understand what you are going through as I had similar difficulties with my late father. Clearing property is always very hard, do you have the help of an estate agent, they often have resources that may help. I would just say take is one step at a time and make the most of your time.
Having young children can also be a blessing but in this situation may mean that you are tired and drained and this is a lot to handle alone. If you would like to chat then please click on the blue butterfly and send me a message or two.
