Inclusive Trick or Treating

More people are becoming aware about how to be inclusive to all Trick or Treaters this Halloween!

Teal Pumpkin Project

When people put out Teal Pumpkins it means they have non-edible treats available. This started off as being a way to be allergy friendly, and this is also good for trick or treaters who have other dietary restrictions.

For some good ideas and some more fanciful ones, check our the on-going A-Z game here

Treat Accessibility

Treat Accessibility offers tips to remove barriers to trick or treaters. Some cities have locations where you can pick up a sign, plus you can print your own and set it outside before Halloween so people know ahead of time your house will be accessible/ Treat Accessibility also hosts  Halloween Villages - inclusive events for Trick or Treaters where all participating households are accessible.

Blue Pumpkins

Some families choose to use a blue pumpkin to indicate that their trick or treater is autistic. This may help create some extra patience for children who may have trouble communicating, aren't comfortable wearing a costume or may have additional sensory needs. Some households also put out blue pumpkins to indicate they are friendly households for these children.

Questions

If you're handing out treats or trick or treating, are you participating in any of these?

Is there a Halloween Village near you?

Share an accessibility tip for any household or trick or treater (hint check out treat accessibility if you're stuck)

Bonus question - share a recipe we can use after carving those pumpkins!

I like to sit out in the driveway, usually in like a wizard robe, in a nicely lit area, with a bowl of candy on the table in front of me. I put out a sign saying to take a couple pieces of candy and talk and smile to the kid without expecting a response. Staying out in the driveway allows for mobility accessibility and a less densely packed area.

This year my sister is going though (she's 3.5yrs) so I'll probably be taking her and helping out with other young children.

@xxParkerxx I love the idea of the wizard robe! That would help with staying warm. I set up on my driveway too.

@AffyAvoI love carving pumpkins and then using the pulp and seeds. Getting all the goo off the seeds and then roasting them with honey or maple syrup or plain sugar sprinkle with cinnamon, or of course just salt.

@AffyAvo I know this is an exactly the topic but I'm gonna try to answer the best way I can. Of course we all know we can make pumpkin pie with pumpkin. I'm not a big fan of scary movies but I watch them at least ones that aren't extremely scary so as far as pumpkins I didn't realize there were so many. I was a pumpkin ones for trick or treat when I was younger I think it was twice and then I was a ghost I believe. I got to this link by the reply mystic left for me on my post.

@DonaldK I have never actually made pie from a whole pumpkin, I always just use the canned stuff!

Dressing up is fun! I haven't dressed up for a while though. Maybe I can come up with something simple to fit over my warm clothes and that doesn't interfere with giving out treats. Will have to think about what will work.

I enjoy Halloween movies, I often put on something once the trick or treating has ended.

@AffyAvo

I did not know about the blue pumpkins. This is such a cool, informative post, Affy. Thanks for promoting inclusivity, especially for holidays when it's easy for folks to take a "one size fits all" approach based on traditions.

@Heather225 Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! Yes, this works well for many, including the youngest trick or treaters in strollers, wagons or toddling around.
