Hello everyone!

Welcome to the first event of 2021. This event's theme is finding motivation when you have depression.

Finding motivation can be really difficult, especially when you are experiencing depression. It can even make it feel impossible to stay motivated at times. However, finding motivation can help us to feel better. It makes us feel like we have completed and stuck with something.

Here are some ways that can help us stay motivated while experiencing depression:

Exercising

Exercising gives us a shot of dopamine and boosts other chemicals in our body, which may reduce our depression. It can help us with motivation by making us feel better. It doesn’t have to be extreme exercise, it can just be a 10 minute walk outside! Start small and work your way up, setting goals can be helpful!

Being Social

When you talk, or even spend time with others it can make you feel like you are not so alone, causing a positive impact on our motivation. While socializing with large groups or new people can be scary for some of us, speaking with people we feel comfortable with such as close friends and family can be a huge motivator for ourselves.


Avoiding Triggers

Triggers can make our depression worse, causing us to lose motivation. While some triggers are hard to avoid, taking steps to avoid them can be beneficial for us.

Proper amounts of sleep

Depression can make getting an adequate amount of sleep difficult. However when we feel tired we are less likely to want to be motivated. We can take small steps to try and help with our sleep, such as setting up a bedtime routine.

We can also do things like set goals, journaling our progress, and celebrating our goals to help us stay motivated. What works for one person might not work for everyone, so it’s important to find what works best for you when it comes to finding motivation.

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated?

I keep in mind the people that love me and care about me, and how they want to see me thriving. On the flip side, I also sometimes get motivated by the idea of spiting the people who try to drag me down, haha.

2. Does your depression make staying motivated challenging?

Yes, definitely.

3. What are some goals you have set for 2021?

Survive. That is all. I'll figure out more elaborate goals after that one's been accomplished; it's hard enough.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated?

Yep. I can get discouraged pretty easily, and my depression will feed off of any negative thoughts or experiences that I encounter or had in the past, so I really need to be careful.

Move most of the way to this city. Get a better place to stay. Maybe a dog

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated? - I try and write down and track my process, being able to see how much I have done really helps. I also try and walk everyday ( Just hard when it's snowing and cold) My mom and I also keep eachother accountable.

2. Does your depression make staying motivated challenging? - Very, I'd rather lay in bed and sleep my life away.

3. What are some goals you have set for 2021? - I'd like to keep growing and healing as a person.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated? - Somedays, when my depression and anxitey are at an all time high. Or I'm just feeling lazy.

1. I stay motivated by making sure I get enough sleep and eat properly. I also remind myself of my goals passions and purpose in life so that I can remember how to be strong again. 2. My depression does make staying motivated challenging. Some days are easier than others but the tough days make it really hard to do anything sometimes. Which is always super tough- 3. Some goals I have are to graduate school which I will in the fall. To learn and set a more cohesive routine for myself in terms of sleeping eating exercising and working and school. Stuff changed throughout like if school is happening or not but I need a better general routine. 4. It’s definitely hard to have the energy to stay motivated. This is the worst on those days I feel the worst and it’s hard to do anything. This also manifests when I am stuck on a negative thought pattern or action that I can’t get out of. It’s hard to have the energy to turn my attention to something positive or better for my health sometimes.

@practicalCoconut4052, I absolutely agree about taking care of yourself! I found that without that it is really hard for me to keep up with my day. I easily fall apart without a proper sleep or regular meals, even if I try to convince myself otherwise.

Do you have a night or morning routine which helps you to keep up with your emotional states?

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated?

Not listening to my negative thoughts - from my experience overthinking and analyzing thoughts bit by bit never got me anywhere. It only worsens my emotional state. So right now I am trying to focus on the present moment whenever I need to do something, and not judge my inner chatter. And if I need to do something my mind perceives as dreadful I then distract myself by:

- listening to music (but it cannot be sad or melancholic);

- listening to podcasts or tedtalks or radioshows (if the task is simple or manual);

- or I use Focusmate to have a companion for the time of doing this task (or ask my family member if they are available).

And then - very important - I will give myself a reward! Big or small, doesn't matter - appreciation of one's efforts is what's important.

2. Does your depression make staying motivated challenging?

Yes. YES. Depression whispers to me all day and night that every activity I take is probably meaningless, so why should I bother? It devours my energy, so why trying to go out of bed? However, I have known her for years now and I know her tricks. She is an old friend, always taking easy-way out, and getting hurt really easily - I suspect she just wants to protect me from pain and sadness. But I do not want to live a sheltered life, so I need to remind myself and my companion that being vulnerable and doing your best is always better than not even trying.

3. What are some goals you have set for 2021?

Staying healthy, in mind and body. Showing affection to my loved ones. Not being afraid of making mistakes.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated?

Oh gosh, absolutely! If I had to rely only on my energy, I probably wouldn't have done anything in my day, because I am creature seeking comfort ^^;

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated?

Journaling my goals, simple journaling and gratitude journaling.

Also, it is meditation focused on the breath. I also do yoga as an exercise - it helps me.

And generally, I do what I really like.

2. Does your depression make staying motivated challenging?

Yes, it is. I am often demotivated, I don't want to do anything. So it is the challenge which I would like to win over.

3. What are some goals you have set for 2021?

To complete couple of projects on python, to meditate and do exercises more often, and to collect enough resources.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated?

It is forever very hard for me. I often have to wait.. for an inspiration. Only under it I feel myself alive more or less.

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated?

I try to motivate myself by trying to think positive through my current struggles and engaging in things which fill me with even the slightest hint of happiness. I keep reminding myself that having a bad day or week does not equate to a "bad life".

At times, yes. More notably so in certain circumstances than others

Usually, I keep my goals to myself. But my main one which I am willing to share is trying to cope better with my mental health and actually apply any skills I've learned from therapy to my routine.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated?

Yes, especially in the day and age of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has changed everyone's life as we know it.

1. What are some ways that help you to stay motivated?

Lately the best thing that has helped me stay motivated so far is engaging with positive-minded people or by listing at least one positive thing in negative situations.

2. Does your depression make staying motivated challenging?

Keeping up with some goals I set last year and building on them for this year.

4. Do you find it hard to have energy to stay motivated?

Yes. I constantly feel overworked every day as if being ground down by the outside world until there is no energy left for me to give to myself. The worst part is I'd probably have energy to give to both the world and myself if there was a better balance.

1) some ways to help stay motivated for me have been making three goals for the day if I can get out of bed brush my teeth and take my pills I've accomplished three things and it makes me more motivated to do other things like exercise. 2) my depression does make things a little bit challenging because outside stressors like friends and work can make me get off track and fall back into my old ways. 3)my main goal for 2021 is to get healthy I've been struggling with my mental and physical health all of 2019 and 2020 but now that I have a great set of doctors and a diagnosis I can get better. 4) I do find it hard to have energy to stay motivated especially with my illnesses I have dysautonomia and an autoimmune disease called uctd that pairs a lot with chronic fatigue syndrome so with those mixed together as well as my depression they can be a really toxic bunch but I'm trying to combat it the best that I can as long as I can get those three goals done I can do anything.
