The literature tells us to try to interupt these kinds of thoughts while we're having them, and limit them to only ten minutes a day or ten minutes a week instead.

It is easier said than done. I have found that I am best at interupting them in myself when I imagine a person I respect greatly standing in front of me telling me to stop, and to think of something else specifically (sometimes I use work projects, etc.)

Searching the web for the best ideas and trying them to see which work best can help...

like this example search result...

https://www.google.com/search?q=STOP+OVERTHINKING

One can refine the web search for specific ideas wanted...

One can also figure out... what things might be causing the problem... and find related solutions.

Here are some generic strategies to deal with thoughts in a smart way (not just push them away)...

Calming the mind and body by connecting with the present moment sensations can help...

Perhaps one thing to do when appropriate is ... stay busy doing useful things in real life... focus on what one is doing in the moment... avoid excessive time just thinking or not being productive... be productive in an active physical way.

Please forgive any typos above.

I recently read that there are people who do not have a constant conversation/play by play/ commentary in their heads. That would be nice. Or at least the constant commentary could be positive.

Trying to turn that off or make it more positive is rather difficult.
