When you're stuck?

LightLithy January 16th, 2017

Whenever I'm stuck. All I want to do is be productive. Productivity makes me believe that my life is going somewhere. Productivity could be anything you want. You could paint, draw, learn an instrument, write or even do 7 cups. Before 7 cups, I didn't feel like my life was going anywhere. Afterwards, everyday feels like I can take on the world. What kinds of things do you do, when you feel stuck? Share your thoughts!

@LightLithy This sounds like a smart-ass answer, but the answer is "something". When you're stuck, do something. It can be something small, but there are always things that you can do or need to do. Go to the store and buy paper towels, even if you don't need them right now. They will keep on the shelf forever, so you did something that was not a waste of time.

It's even better if you can do something that involves other people. When you're buying paper towels, make the cashier smile by saying something like "that's a cool tatoo", or something. It doesn't have to be big, Just find something that you need to do or can do and start with that. Soon, you'll make a habit of pulling yourself out of the rut you thought you were in.

@10ship I don't know. Me personally, I don't feel productive when I'm doing regular things. I guess it's from the pressure to be the perfect student, with all the options. So whenever, I feel like I'm advancing my education, is where I feel the best. Going to the store almost seems like a waste of time for me, especially when I can order those things in bulk, online. But you know, just preference.

@LightLithy Ah, but the point is to do something that makes you feel productive. In your case, you've got the advantage that you know what sorts of things make you feel productive. Some people don't know what to do, so they have to start somewhere to find out. You didn't say what you're studying, but let's say, for example, you're a math student. Just pull out the book and work a problem - any problem. That's the kind of thing that gets you started.

Note that I'm not argueing with you. I'm agreeing with you. As a budding listener, you'll have plenty of people who want to argue with you. ( yeah, I read your profile). Your job is to provide support and a listening ear. The way you responded to me tells me that you can do that. I appreciate the dialog. Thanks for talking.

@10ship

I like a good debate here and there. Regardless of being in or school or out of school. There are plenty of things to study. Maybe it's not fun for all. But I have at least 10 learning apps on my phone. Language learning apps, math learning, programming apps, pharmacy test apps, etc. You don't have to be in school to improve knowledge on something. And I agree, not everyone knows what to do to keep themselves feeling productive. And some may ask, what's the point of using this knowledge you might not ever use? There will be a time, that it could come in handy. But neither here nor there. The point is, to do something.

@LightLithyThanks for the response. Have you been spying on me? I have a differential geometry book next to my bed. I can't to all the maths, but working thru some of the excercises helps me understand some of the other books I like to read.

Language, you say? Do you know HelloTalk. I use it to learn a language and to talk to people half way around the world. That actually does come in handy sometimes.

I think a lot of the people on 7cups are looking for something a lot more basic - How to get thru the day, but the first step is to find the small step that will allow them to make progress in whatever direction they need to go.

Again, thanks for talking. Anytime you want a debate, let me know.

Help! I have extreme phone anxiety, how can I get over this?! I really need to call my dr and therapist but I can't even make the phonecall! I'm becoming more and more suicidal but the only support available seems to be over a phone. I have talked to my friends about how I feel, but there's only so much they can do. I need professional help but I can't get it.

@LightLithy

Hey~
I totally agree that depression can make us stuck. What I do is to let myself know nothing bad is going to happen, don't be afraid, don't be anxiety. Also, cut things into little tinny steps. Try something without pressure. :D :D This all helps. <3

That's awesome! I'm glad that you're keeping yourself active and happy. :) The more simple you make things, the less stressful they become.

When I'm stuck, I like to do good things for myself. That could be art, writing, spending time with my dog, going on a walk or using the atv and enjoying nature! I just want to do something for myself that I enjoy :)

Another thing I do to combat depression, watch comedy, write in my journal about my feelings and reflect on how those feelings are effecting my life. Any other good ways to combat depression?

LightLithy OP January 23rd, 2017

There are many ways to be stuck in life or to feel stuck. Someone can feel academically stuck, stuck in their love life, or stuck in their home life. It's important to remember that if you're actively thinking about it and doing something about it, it's only going to be temporary. You're working towards something that will change your future.

Self-Care. Has anyone done it? It could be something that helps with Depression. I was recently pulled to a forum about, "why self-care is hard" Honestly as someone who can't exactly explain this. There was a good point, sometimes we don't necessary understand what we want or what will make us happy. Self-care, should be about getting to know yourself and your body. Find what makes you happy and go out and take care of yourself! Sounds easier said than done, but today that'll be my mission.

How to deal with depression from being overwhelmed?

Now, I can say that you should stay positive all day, until I'm blue in the face.

However, it doesn't always work that way. Sometimes, people feel more sense of achievement, when they do things by themselves.

So why, do we enable those that we care about?

Because we care.

If you know someone who is stuck. Let me know what you do to help them out!

The new message from Glen, certainly was inspirational to some degree. However, I have my own issues with AA as a whole. I've noticed that most listeners on here, have no idea what AA is. So it's really hard to talk about the similarities between 7 cups and AA. But that's not the point. The point is, regardless of why you're here. There's always a way to make yourself happy and to succeed in that.

Those of you who follow this thread, thanks so much for your support. As someone that battles depression, I feel that even if I don't have a lot of people who post on here. At least, it has the ability to make an impression on someone, so thanks to everyone that comes out and supports! If you have any tactics of battling depression. I'd love to hear it!
