What is the worst thing anyone has ever said to you?

devu2001 April 29th, 2017

What other people say and think about us affects us a lot. What is the worst thing anyone has ever said to you that had left you with extreme sadness and low self esteem?

@devu2001

The worst thing said to me was their inability to say nothing at all. Words hurt but silence kills.

Sorry, I totally screwed that up, doh! LOL cheeky

I mean, the worst thing said to me was their inability to say anything. Words hurt but silence kills.

When I was in 8th grade I got a B on my science test, and my own dad told me to go leave the house and become a prostitute. It was shocking to hear when I was so young and especially since it came out of my own family member.

@deantbrl That's honestly horrible that he said that. B isn't even a bad score! Grades don't determine people's worth, value, intelligence or anything, especially a single grade on a test =(.

Funny enough, I thought I knew the worst thing that was said to me but I was wrong. Just happened yesterday, I was told "If I had to live like you, I'd kill myself" (I'm disabled and suffer from chronic pain). Came from someone I am/was very close to. Don't think I'll be able to look at her the same....I'm pretty much done with everyone I know. Now I have to live with knowing I'm better off dead, to those who were dearest to me. Like I didn't need more reasons to give up on life.

@TrueArrow I know that the wording of what your friend said may seem really harsh, and I'm very sorry that you are hurting and feeling alone. Although it was very insensitive, I thought about what your friend said and I think they possibly could have meant this in a "backhanded compliment" type of way. By your friend saying they would kill themselves if they were in your position (again, not a good thing to say regardless of intent), they may have meant that you're much stronger than they would be if they were in the same position. Therefore, they were insinuating that you are very strong. The wording choice they used was obviously poor, but if this is someone close to you, maybe try to give them the benefit of the doubt and at least speak to them to clarify what they said, and let them know it hurt you. I hope you feel better soon. <3

@Kopedan

Well, unfortunately we were arguing and that's when they said that. When I spoke to them the next day, they were unapologetic and said I was "egging them on". What prompted said words was because I said they should appreciate being healthy, because they not always be and may need help too one day (I felt they were acting like they were better than me because of a personal matter I was needing assistance with).

I don't believe I'm stronger than anyone else, it's just the card I was dealt with in life. It just hurt because I've thought about ending my life many times because of my disability. I almost attempted suicide a few years back, they didn't know that.

I decided to forgive them though.

@TrueArrow

Wow I'm so sorry. That was a really messed up thing to say then :( even in the heat of an argument, while people do say certain things they come to regret, that was so harsh of them to say. I'm glad you were able to forgive them and I hope they continue to be a source of positivity for you rather than negativity.

The worst thing anyone ever said to me was... I hope your dad didn't sexually abuse you, because I told him not to do it.

(This was said by my mother and my response to her statement was "If you knew he was capable of that, why did you leave me with him all those years?")

Thanks for your reply and your kind words.

Unfortunately, I was abused indeed and it is deeply buried.

Mom avoids me now.....

When my parents asked me " so are you f***king insane in the head now?" for telling them our family doctor suggested I exhibited symptoms of depression when I was 16. Their words scathed me so much that I refrained from going to a proper psychiatrist to get an official diagnosis even 'til now. (But I'm pretty sure I do have the illness.)

It's just really hurtful to hear the people you're supposed to be closest to basically flat out told they'll reject you for being honest and admitting your problems...But after a few years I stopped giving a crap.

creativeCamp2095 May 6th, 2017

My mom once said I was hard to love and now denies she ever said it.

May 6th, 2017

i don't want to be rude or anything, i'm just interesed.
what's the purpose of this thread ? especially in a depression forum.
people who are depressed tend to remember bad things that happened in their lives, i really think that it's quite unhelpful to make them remember the worst thing someone said to them.
that can lead to feelings of guilt, worthlessness and similar.

so, i'm again asking, what's the purpose of this thread ?

just interesed smiley

@FuturePsychologist2

I think for me, it's a way of releasing a bad memory, that you couldn't share otherwise. I don't typically tend to share my thoughts and feelings with my family, so most of the time I'm left ruminating all day without anyone really noticing. With everything that is shared on this site, it's just a way of feeling recognized and acknowledged for the pain and hurt of someone's words or actions. I think thats the point of the thread.

well for me it helps to let it out and face it. Seeing it written helps me to come to terms with my painful past. What I deny I don't accept. So acceptance is beginning the healing process.

Julietlovesu415 May 9th, 2017

@FuturePsychologist2 personally I think its a great idea because you can get support around something that makes you feel worthless or less than.
