Self care/Mental Health

jasishereforallofu January 21st, 2023

Make Mental Notes to Take Care of Myself - I've been trying to change my mindset, cause I heard that helps, and rewire it to the point where my mind will be like "hey we need to take care of this soon" for instance, getting my toes done, taking care of my hair, buying more products I need, trying to think more positively, being more aware of whatever I do, etc. Now my brain can't help but tell me to look around at myself and see if everything on me is good or needs some construction.

Affirmations - believe it or not, they actually work. What I do is I'll usually find a quote or something that really stands out to me and I'll save it to my photos and look at it from time to time whenever I feel it's a good time to look at it again. Or I'll see an affirmation over and over again online and eventually it just repeats in my head and it soon becomes apart of my life. And whenever I feel those low and negative verges approaching, I'll tell myself those affirmations.

Mental Trackers - again, what I said for journals, one of those is used for my mental health. Well, I like to do this thing called a mental check up tracker where I check up on myself mentally to see where my head is at. So I'll write down:

  • what I've been feeling (ex. sad, mad, exhausted, lost, etc.)
  • what I've noticed myself doing (ex. lashing out, self-sabotaging, forgetting things, zoning out a lot, emotionally detaching, etc.)
  • thoughts I've been having (ex. why am I acting like this?, why do I keep doing these things?, etc.)
  • things that currently triggered me to feel and do such things (ex. anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, family, work, trauma, etc.)
  • and lastly I'll write what methods have I done to try to heal or better my mental (ex. sleep, breathing exercises, a good crying session, mental discipline, etc.)

Journal - I have 2 journals. 1 to write down my mental health and monthly agendas and 2 to do journal prompts and write whatever else I'm personally feeling or want to get off my chest.

Music - music can always be a good option. For me, I usually listen to music when I have songs in my head that won't go away. But music keeps me at a calm state or at least puts me in a better mood.

Hopefully this can also help somebody else if they need it. Mental health is usually not taken seriously and is more ignored as well as self care in general but it really does exist and should be treated with care and love. If you or someone else is struggling with mental health or other issues, please talk to someone you're close to or a therapist/counselor. Please don't be afraid to reach out and speak up.

@jasmineishereforu

Your post are always so lovely and helpful Jas<3

I also keep journals, but they are kind of unstructured. So, the idea of mental tracker seems soooo helpful! Definitely trying this💜

@jasmineishereforu Sounds like good ideas for maintaining one's mental health. I don't use affirmations, though...at least not out loud. I tried those for a while without any good result. But we are all different, & there are surely a few people out there (or maybe a lot) who would benefit from repeating affirmations. (One thought I've had: Today's affirmations are the secular, pop-psych equivalent of the Hindu mantra. Is this true? Or not?)

When my depression hits it's often in response to a bad situation. One tactic I use is to remember things I've done...accomplishments to my credit. Even if my ailments have reduced me to doing a corpse impression in bed, my life wasn't always like that, after my diagnosis I've had good days, I've gotten things done on those days, &--to use the tired (but still useful) phrase--most likely, better days will come.
