from painterly to cartoony

I'm tagging my cupfriends, I hope this works~~
I was drawing in my sketchbook the other day and my father noted that he really liked my work; then he didn't. he said, it was awesome, but he liked it better when they were just... lines.
my style is just so painterly. I didn't even use paint, I used brush pens, then smudged things together with putting dots a white sakura gelly roll and brushing them out with a colorless blender brush pen.
nowadays I was wacthing cartoon network's 30th livestream and I got motivated to try out a more... inked style. when there are just lines, colored. for some reason, it sounds scary to me. no chance to smudge out mistakes 😅 but... I really want to try.

Wow very nice! I've dabbled a little with brush pens but haven't gotten even close to this good with them! Great work, beautifully done :) I like the vibe too, spooky but beautiful and oddly comforting, lol!
@ThadSterling
glad you like it :3
they're Grim and an older Mandy from gaobam. I like the dance macabre and death and the maiden themes from art history, and they just fit well. recently I've seen an anime--actually, two versions of it, called The Vampire Princess Miyu (one is four-part, the other is 26, and both are vastly different from the manga). Miyu is not actually a princess, but a 姫, pronounced ひめ (hime), meaning lovely young lady. she's a vampire, yes, but she also has a sturdy and dirty job: to send shinmas / demons back to darkness from the human realm. both versions make the story to be quite different, but, in both, she eventually came across this very powerful shinma, Lava, who defeated her, but she also defeated him by having some of his blood, so, somehow, she enslaved Lava to be her teammate backup and protector in her battles, but their relationship over the years has become just naturally soulmate-like, as they both know sorrow, but, they keep on living, as they both know sorrow together. Lava hides in a dark cloak and a white mask, being ashamed of his defeat, and, in some versions, uses a scythe... lepk, it reminded me of them :3
sorry for my rambling >_<
I usually paint digitally and in a more painterly style rather, because I find making linearts to be difficult. when transforming to traditional media, I just couldn't restrict myself did what I knew. but, I have some sakura fineliners, and I do intend to practice doing linework.
I did the painting under with clip studio paint, I think it's my best work yet :3 I just adore these two, and I agree: spooky, but oddly comforting. feels so good to write them and draw them.
I think it didn't send it...? *tries again *
it still haunts me that in fifth to eighth grade there was this girl who could draw so well, so clean, while I took my time just smudging out my pencils with my thumb and tissues, resulting in just grayscale... messes. she always taunted me because of that, amongst many other things.
oh my. after I became an adult, I'm glad that I started drawing again. in the beginning, it was awful, again, but I was free. and I'm really glad that I managed to make something I both enjoy and like nowadays :3
@MemoryWriter11 Woah i love the style!!! Its really cool :D ! I tried multiple times drawing with brush pens/markers and failed each time lol!
@Camille7878
try doing an undersketch just lightly with a pencil, lay down the colors with the brush pens, then do some linework above with a pen / fineliner above. it can give a watercolor-y feeling to the weird places. hope that helps 🤔
@MemoryWriter11 Ooh okay tysm!!
@MemoryWriter11 That looks awesome!! Mad skills, that drawing gives me the vibes of a bittersweet ending of a love story 🌿🌱 love how you made the coloring btw
Wonderful work @MemoryWriter11
