Water-Mixable Oil paint?
by MistyMagic
Last post
December 30th, 2023
...See more The late, great Bob Ross, painting one of his mountain tops! Now that it is harder and harder to keep the windows open because of the chilly weather I have been investigating water-mixable oil paint and I wondered if any of the painters out there had ever used it or had any tips or thoughts on it? Apparently, it is an oil paint that can be cleaned off brushes using water and soap rather than thinners or spirits making it safer. Reviews tell about different odours and smells of the paints and mediums. From wiki:- * Water mixable oils are genuine oil paints, formulated with the base of a drying oil. Unlike traditional oil paints, this drying oil base will have been modified so that it can be mixed with water. An additive is introduced to the oil and works as an emulsifier, allowing small droplets of oil to blend into water to form a stable solution. so any oil painter out there with a view? *

Painting Styles - Luminism
by MistyMagic

...See more Luminism - What is? Leander's Tower on the Bosphorus (1876) What is Luminism? From Wiki Luminism is an American landscape painting [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_painting] style of the 1850s to 1870s, characterized by the effects of light in landscape, through the use of aerial perspective and the concealment of visible brushstrokes. Luminist landscapes emphasize tranquility and often depict calm, reflective water and a soft, hazy sky. Artists who were most central to the development of the luminist style include Fitz Hugh Lane, Martin Johnson, Johnson Heade and Sanford Gifford. one of my favourites is this one of the Bosphorus, it uses light and colour and seems to have innate luminosity! Now if only I could paint like that! There is so much detail only using what appears to be one colour but which could be made up from several. These are a few examples of luminism. Ruins of the  Panthenon 1880 Lake Geneve 1875 Venetian Sails, A Study (1873) Mr. Gifford's method is this: When he sees anything which vividly impresses him, and which therefore he wishes to reproduce, he makes a little sketch of it in pencil on a card about as large as an ordinary visiting-card. It takes him, say, half a minute to make it; there is the idea of the future picture fixed as firmly if not as fully as the completed work itself. While traveling, he can in this way lay up a good stock of material for future use. The next step is to make a larger sketch, this time in oil, where what has already been done in black-and-white is repeated in color. To this sketch, which is about twelve inches by eight, he devotes an hour or two. It serves the purpose of defining to him just what he wants to do. He experiments with it; puts in or leaves out, according as he finds that he can increase or perfect his idea. When satisfactorily finished, it is a model of what he proposes to do. He is now ready to paint the picture itself. When the day comes, he begins work just after sunrise, and continues until just before sunset. Ten, eleven, twelve consecutive hours, according to the season of the year, are occupied in the first great effort to put the scene on canvas. He feels fresh and eager. His studio-door is locked. Nothing is allowed to interrupt him. When the long day is finished and the picture is produced, the work of criticism, of correction, of completion, is in place. Mr. Gifford does this work slowly. He likes to keep his picture in his studio as long as possible. Sometimes he does not touch the canvas for months after his first criticisms have been executed. Then, suddenly, he sees something that will help it along.  How many of us sketch to keep the eye of what we see and so we can later on use that sketch and our eye will remember and make it easier to paint?

Art supplies you love to use!
by MistyMagic
Last post
September 7th, 2023
...See more So I was looking to make a travel art set and I started thinking about whether I would put my best pens and paintbrushes in or not. So I started thinking about whether Hobby Zone artists and wannabe artists (like me) could share tips and art supplies that you love to use and that won't be too expensive. I am sure that around the world we all have different suppliers and prices so really just detailing the name and why you love it will help rather than giving links. So I love to use sable similar brushes that are synthetic, they bounce, they hold lots of water and paint and really make my art a lot easier lol I don't like to use real hair brushes anymore now that I realise they are really animal, but the synthetics work well and also tail hair like goat hair bristle is something that a lot of people use. What about your paints what favourite colors do you use? Tubes, solid pans or powders? What about paper, what kind, what color, what coating? I use hot pressed for my flower studies and rough for landscapes. So lets share and see how we get on. @Aileen1114117 @Aliceiin3rdwonderland @confidentrabbit7311 @corinnajoyhenryluv @CosmicMiracle @DipityEnigma @EmotionsListener @enigmaticsmile321 @FallandWinterPlease00 @HealingTalk @Helpingheart23 @hiraxx @independentFig7852 @jujubears @LadyOrgasma @Liv125 @Lou73 @Meifeng @Merliah001 @MilaAvery @MistyMagic @NicholasW @Paprika001 @practicalTree3613 @SerenitysFire @SleepyShyCat @SmileSravani @SparklingSeashells @Sunisshiningandsoareyou @sweetrosa1987 @ThadSterling @thandocilo @theboymoana @tidyHickory3283 @Walker7957 @WarmLightXO @WorriedMagpie

...See more @Alwayssleepyfornoreasonatall @millipede03 I'm tagging my cupfriends, I hope this works~~ ------------------------- I was drawing in my sketchbook the other day and my father noted that he really liked my work; then he didn't. he said, it was awesome, but he liked it better when they were just... lines. my style is just so painterly. I didn't even use paint, I used brush pens, then smudged things together with putting dots a white sakura gelly roll and brushing them out with a colorless blender brush pen. nowadays I was wacthing cartoon network's 30th livestream and I got motivated to try out a more... inked style. when there are just lines, colored. for some reason, it sounds scary to me. no chance to smudge out mistakes 😅 but... I really want to try.
