What is the most common MISCONCEPTION about your culture?
It's easy to buy into stereotypes about your country or culture. What is the most common misoconception you see and what do you think peope should know?
People usually think that everyone in Colombia do drugs which is not true and like not more than people in other countries. Some people thing the whole country is a jungle, we have cities, there are warm cities, there are cold cities, not all the country is warm either.
I wish people understand that stereotypes can often not be true or there can by maaaany exceptions.
More than start assuming "is it true that in Colombia all....?" people could ask things in a better way "how is this like in Colombia?"
@Imaginativa2930
I've always wanted to visit Columbia! I was in Panama not too long ago and it was absolutely amazing. I definietly came across this stereotype though :(
@Imaginativa2930
Wow people actually think that??? Ignorance really is sad to see :(
I find your country super beautiful! The people seem so friendly! And the views are AMAZING!
@Booklover95 Yes :c but each time the stigma is lower ^w^
I love the views too, I have had the opportunity to go to different cities and little towns in my country and totally love it! Thank you for appreciating my country.
THat we are spanish (I'm portuguese).
Annoys me because Spanish and Portuguese people are very different. Is two gorgeous cultures. And although I find spanish culture beautiful annoys me that my culture is always associated with it just because most people don't even bother about gathering information :|
@Booklover95 I didn't know this stigma! :o I think you're country is very interesting, I wonder the differences of the languages with Brazil but I don't speak Portuguese yet to understand better.
@Imaginativa2930
Thank you ! :)
Well is actually easy to understand. The best way I can explain is imagine british english with the american english. Is the exact same language but with different accents and some different words. European Portuguese and Brazilian portuguese is the same :)
@Booklover95
I did not know european and brazillian portugese were the same .Thanks for the info .I always thought they had some variations ,as in Latin spanish and eurpeon spanish
@lovelySpring74
It is the same language just like latin spanish and european spanish is, but there is differences in accents and certain words. But overal is the same yes.
Glad I could help :)
Well, to be honest, the opinions and views are so varying that I can't think of one important misconception I wish to dismiss. Perhaps someone in this thread could point something they hear about north africans and I'd happily argue it :).
That we are still part of Czechoslovakia. It's really frustrating to talk to tourists that still think that. I mean, if you go on a holiday somewhere, you at least learn the name, right? 😬😬😬
@ShaynaRae
That my indian parents will have to choose my soulmate for me .Last night my uber driver asked me 'If i would require my wife to wear hijab '. I had to strech a really long conversation to explain that it depends on individual and no I would be much better off looking for my own soulmate .A women has the right to wear what she wants and if hijab is what she prefers ,i don't have any problem with that .Same goes vice versa.
That we are savages or some historical culture that died out. We aren't savages and our culture is still very alive, active, and modern. (Native American)
That Arab girls don't have any freedom. And could you stop thinking that SA is representing all the Arabs/Muslims of the world ? They are living in their dark ages. Why none is taking Indonesia as a representative for Muslims, or UAE as a representative for Arabs ?
That's annoying... All the world is seeing us as criminals, retarded and all the stuff, while we're just normal people.
The common misconception about Filipinos is that we are all domestic helpers, nurses or call center agents. But we are far more than that.
