Friday Fiction: Narrative Voice

ouiCherie August 19th, 2022

Often referred to as Point of View (PoV). 3 common types of narrative voice:

First Person: the character is the narrator, and we use “I” and “me” in telling the story.

Second Person: it’s when we use a lot of “you” and “your” to tell the story. Speak directly to the reader or another character in the story.

Third Person: typically using “he”, “she”, “him/ his”, “her”, “they”, “them” or the character’s name, and the narrator isn’t the character.

The third person point of view is the most common point of view out of the most common three xD so we’ll explore it a bit. Typical 3rd person point of view:

Omniscient: A know-it-all narrator, can go inside the characters’ minds, and sometimes time leaps. It was quite popular in the past.

Limited: In this story, the narrator can only look into the head and experience the emotions of one character. Consider using dialogue or describing body language or facial expressions if you want to suggest what the other characters are feeling or thinking.

Multiple PoV: The story told from the perspective of multiple characters. Usually, the point of view alternates between chapters.

  • Which one is your favourite when you read a story?
  • Choose 1 narrative voice and write a short paragraph that tells about the day the character has finally overcome depression.

@ouiCherie

Ooh this is both informative and interesting, Cherie. Thankyou for sharing.💜

I don't think I have a major preference hehe, for this one though, first person and third person.

I'm unsure about this one, but let's try lol!

>>>> It's almost time for dinner, for the first time in the longest while, they didn't feel irritated as their mother called for them, after a long time they were actually looking forward to spend time with their family, in general feeling comfortable about being around people, may even have booked tickets to a seasonal festival to attend with some friends in the upcoming week. Dinner went great, there was baked vegetables in cheese sauce with some lasagna, a normal family time at the table, mother was happy her child was content, father was relaxed his child was eating with them at the table unlike other times they didn't even know if they ate something. Good night, everyone said to each other after cleaning the table, and this time they knew it was going to be a better night than all others, this time they were hopeful tomorrow is going to be a good day. One last thing before dozing off, opened their journal and scribbled some words, the page reads- "I feel okay, I feel okay, I'm going to be okay, and nothing will change that ever, because so long I'm hopeful and I keep trying my best, I will indeed end up being okay.", a smiley emoji and the curtain dropsssss!

(Woah I didn't realize haha, probably a little long, but here we gooo, paragraph cum a small scene hehe) 😃

Aw... that scene feels so peaceful and I love the powerful affirmations 😍

In all honesty, I wrote the question and paragraph writing prompt on spot, and wondering if I myself can do it 😅 but you did it. Superb! Thanks Sunnie 💙

Me trying the exercise myself 😅

He was riding down the scenic terrain of St. Anton, looking like one of the snowboarders. He knew they were behind him, but couldn't tell how far or if they were aware that he was cruising faster and faster. The track was crowded making it difficult to navigate at the speed he was going. At one point, he made a 360-degree spin to see any signs of his chasers. He could almost hear his heart beating loud and fast as he made a sharp turn and disappeared into the hidden track to the backcountry. He was back on the terrain he left six months ago, after learning from his father about the terrifying story that turned him into an empty shell of despair full of anger at the ghosts of the past. He had no intention of going back, of seeing his old man ever again, nor did he dream of staying alive, yet there he was, back in the wild terrain, more alive than ever, despite the situation. He is back to save the man he owes his life to.

@ouiCherie this is so amazing and interesting: thank you for clarifying all the voices as I didnt actually know this in depth, this is such a cool forum and I hope others join in on the discussion! And I am definitely participating :) I want to start writing my new discussion soon for my community, as im the only one around at the moment LOL

  • Which one is your favourite when you read a story? My favorite is the first person.

Choose 1 narrative voice and write a short paragraph that tells about the day the character has finally overcome depression.

I suffered from depression on and off for a few years now. I was sick and tired of feeling hopeless! Without adequate coping skills and a supportive social circle I could not get the help I wanted or feeling loved or cared About, which led me to stay in my awful depression. Well one day I coaxed myself out of bed, had a realization that i was done feeling like this everyday, the misery was too much. I started taking my medication again, I took a nice walk, listened to the sounds of nature, got cozy started a new book! I realized that I had to pull myself together and push myself to be motivated and going forward all while using my awesome coping skills.
