@ouiCherie Addiction would me be being on it for long hours and think about it all the time
I would say my addiction is social media
I try and use cups more than any other social media platforms. It helps divert my mind
@yourbuddy30
I hear you π€ it can be challenging to keep us away from the addictive thing.
In what way do being addicted to social media harmful for you? And what made spending time on cups more is a better option?
@ouiCherie It wasnt harmful but it kind off has an impact on my mind. I feel the urge to open and reply to the messages or just open even if i dont receive a text.
Cups is a better option as here i can help others and also participate in discussions and gain a lot of knowledge
@ouiCherie
I'm petty sure I'm a addicted to caffeine and I know I binge-eat all the time.
I have however been two months clean on caffeine and I'm super happy about it!
@ouiCherie, hello! hope you're well
- Giving up autonomy because of prolonged contact with harmful behaviors or substances.
- Mine used to be alcohol, now I'm 77 days sober. It took an OD and my family finding out, for me to see it was hurting and not helping me, like I thought. Therapy has been useful, too.
The adrenaline rush was harder to deal with, because I thought it was simply a personality trait. Understanding the negative side effects helped, but the possibility of reducing my panic attacks is what motivated me to get rid of any excess energy through regular exercise. - It helps to know you're not alone. I met others with similar experiences in Addiction Support Room and Sharing Circle. If you contact a long-term listener and asked them to support you, that'd help.
I hope reading this can make someone feel less lonely on their own paths.
@TryingTBH2021
77 days sober! Proud of you π You've got this! π
Do you mind share how's it feels being free so far?
@ouiCherie, aw, thank you! π
Well, it is by no means a linear process. There's been days when I almost gave up because I couldn't deal with my feelings, and drinking seemed like the best option. But I waited the urge out. I went through withdrawal, which hit me so hard I can hardly believe I made it through. Sometimes even out of boredom I wanted to drink.
All in all, it has taken plenty of lifestyle adjustments, including getting rid of all alcoholic drinks in the house, taking up other hobbies and also, talking to my family and learning to laugh about it. See, that last one is what makes me feel truly free of it. No one can say that what I went through wasn't dangerous, but it makes me immensely happy to be able to joke around a bit with my family, because it means they trust me again. That they see it as something that happened to me, and not something that defines who I am.
I feel a lot more stronger now, it's definitely been a lesson on resilience- and compassion. I'll remember this year as the bridge that allowed me to be more honest and open to others, and finally have the meaningful conversations I craved for.
I believe addiction is a description for whatever we repeatedly turn to in a response to a stressor.
For me it is food and the feeling of fullness that takes me attention from other physical symptoms and anxiety. I am working to overcome it because of mobility issues due to my weight.
@lishalu0606
I hear you π€ it's not easy, but you can do this π one step at a time.
how do you plan to switch the pattern of using food to calm you down to something else?
Thank you for interacting! I am working with coaches, this program, and Recovery Record. My hope is to get specific about the triggers and start building, with coach support from there.
I am slowly figuring it out, but that is normal pace for me. Right now it starts my day interacting and then off and on throughout the day. I also have a listener who is knowledgeable about eating disorders and ADHD.
- Not being able to have the control needed to resist.
- Yes, thereβs a particular substance I would like to overcome. Knowing itβs wrong an unhealthy.
- Iβm still trying to figure that out. Joining the Addiction Support Community might be a start.
@CYC135
The definition couldn't be more true!
That's a great idea to start with joining Addiction Support. Whenever there's a group support session, you can meet and share with people who would understand the journey and the struggles well.
Tagging @magicalOcean594 here and wishing you the best CYC π€ thank you for sharing
@CYC135
hi cyc<3 are you thinking of just engaging in the community or becoming a leader of our team:) if so let me know reach out!
@magicalOcean594 thanks.
@ouiCherie howdy and thank you for helping us with addictions:-)
in response to your questions. Addiction; Would call it something that harms us knowingly and our inability to stop it without intervention of some sort.. wether that be our own conscious alteration or outside help.. combined with an inability to be able to have a moderate amount of whatever addicts us..
several for myself, learning more as days go by.(sugar a big one, that didnβt realise, chocolate, I LOVE and been addicted to that the longest time.. such an easy quick soft hit struggle to only eat some and normally eat the whole block). Smoking cigarettes when in public places or driving to events to give me something to distract my silly brain.. managed to cut that down,
the addiction actually proud of and stopped drinking anything just over a month :-) with only 3 days drinking anything (best mates 50th, one day I used as a go to for crappy day and meeting friends arenβt seen in 10+ years) 74 days.. stopped 4th July and told people around, the little remote town.. off the sauce.. they were surprised and actually supportive.. I told them would stop until NYE but my intentions never to drink again.. π€πΎπ¦πΊβοΈπ¦πΆπ
now the reasons for this non alcohol thing are many, but the main ones that looking back at every issue with relationships family, friend or Misses there was alcohol involved.. I never really could stop, drank until no drinks left.. or pass out etc.. and it was inhibiting the potential of what I could be doing with this time on earth.. there was a issue also I get very intolerant of fools when drunk and living in the bush it is a small group of people to actually interact with.. one guy got a few deserved punches in the head NYE last year at a bbq.. and found that I was getting upset by things that would be able to walk away from in not drinking..
new to 7 cups and it has helped with some of the things read, asked about and looked at :) put it up in my only real social media thingy LinkedIn βοΈππ€·πΌββοΈπ¦πΊ π¦πΎπ
not sure that makes any sense but hope it answered what needed.. I did find that instead of dealing with things on my own, chosen to go online to 7cups and felt better than before.. maybe distractions or knowing / seeing others going thru similar things.. even could have written the exact thing as one or two people.. somehow reassuring or enabling my silly head to chillax.. being 24-7 helps also.. thanks again for your efforts.. :)
@ouiCherie,
Hi, Cherie,
- What is addiction in your own words? being obsessed with something
- Do you have any addiction you would like to overcome? A particular substance? Alcohol? Binge-eat? Social media? Smoking? Porn? Shopping? Are you addicted to an adrenaline rush, perhaps? What made it necessary, if not crucial, for you to overcome it? I am addicted to drugs, alcohol, and binge eating. My behaviour was out of control, and the abuse is very unhealthy for me.
- If you would suggest, how to use 7 Cups to support a recovery journey? Come here and talk and let it all out. No judgement. We are all equals here.
@purpleTree4652
Hi Purple, spot on! It is indeed an obsession in something that can make us anxious or restless when we try to resist.
Great tip! Talk it out to explore our triggers and options that may help. No judgement. We are all fighting each of our own battles.
Thank you for sharing π keep going, Purple! Every step leads to another, every little win matters, and every set back strengthen us.
