4) Team Lightship: Tweeting Empathy
In our introduction, we briefly understood an introduction to how social media-based marketing at 7 Cups uses a project called Team Lightship.
In this discussion, we will understand how the Lightship initiative works in terms of using tweets for spreading awareness, support, as well as 7 Cups content and other service information. We will also learn how the Twitter platform can be used to outreach to people requiring and in search of mental health support, in order to ensure that mental health is not ignored or stigmatized on social media.
(i) Using Tweets to Spread Awareness, Support, and Content/Service Information:
As previously discussed, the goal of Lightship is to use social media to reach out to those in need using kind and empathetic messages.
General tips include:
-
What you tweet about should reflect the compassionate, supportive, and kind community that 7 Cups is. Use your best judgment.
-
View your Team Lightship account as a force for good, and for spreading the 7 Cups mission and values.
-
Feel free to discuss emotions, situations, and topics that often occur on 7 Cups.
-
You might also want to post/retweet quotes or pictures, and that’s 100% okay! Just remember that reaching out to people should be a priority. Think of how social media graphics can be used in that sense, to engage people.
-
Note: Lightship uses referral links (found on your dashboard page under the list of chats) to direct users to the 7 Cups site.
Tips in regards to which areas or services of 7 Cups you can mention (apart from the general fact about 1:1 or group chats!): Self-Help Guides, Expert Articles, Free Mindfulness Exercises.
Sample Tweets:
Having a tough time? Don't keep it all inside. If you want to talk, we're here to listen 24/7 #7Cups https://www.7cups.com/17156123 #MentalHealthMatters
Need inspiration from people who have overcome Postnatal Depression? Read these stories of women using their recovery to aid others! https://www.7cups.com/experts/postnatal-depression-recovery
(ii) Using Twitter to Outreach People Seeking Support:
The following steps are helpful ways to identify and respond to people seeking support:
-
Search for Keywords
Some keywords or hashtags can prominently help search for people in need of support.
Note: The following and other mental health-related tags on social media platforms can contain potentially triggering content.
-
Prominent Tags: need to vent, need a friend, feeling lonely, anxious, and depressed.
-
Other Tags Examples:
-
#depressed #anxious #depression #mentalhealth (high volume tags)
-
#needtotalk
-
#bullying
-
#chronicpain #chroniclife
-
#coping
-
#peersupport
-
#selfcare
Note: These keywords or hashtags can also be used in your own tweets to help ensure visibility and engagement.
-
Reply to Tweets
After your search for important hashtags and keywords, when you find someone who has tweeted using one of those tags, and looks to be in need of support, reach out to them! Respond to their tweet with a message that includes information about how 7 Cups can support them.
Activity
Using what you learned about the Lightship protocol:
-
Create one general hypothetical tweet that is supportive and compassionate.
-
Respond to this Tweet using the outreaching tips:
3. Reply to one other student’s responses for both (1) and (2) and offer a review about their response: don’t forget to mention strengths as well as improvements they can make!
Please do not forget to personally save your activity answers as well as your reply to another user’s answer (recommended on Google Doc or other means) as you will be asked to share this for your Weekly Progress Report.

Great answers!
I love how precisely you described 7cups and the work they do in question 1.
I love how you tried to make the poster feel comfortable by trying to relate to their anxiety in question 2.
I think you could approve by using a few hashtags.
All the best 👍
@BlueCup55 The first tweet is a good reminder for people seeking help to keep coming back to the 7 cups platform.
The second tweet is a great reality check.
@BlueCup55
I love how you introduce 7 Cups very well and in an empathetic tone 💜
Constructive feedback for future (no need to revise): we can't hyperlink text on Twitter post, so it would be better to share url or mention @7cups account.
Great job, overall, Blue!
@BlueCup55
Oooh! This is so good! I like how you brought up 7Cups. Great job!
@BlueCup55
1. This one was very encouraging to and a great way to represent 7Cups!
2. Covering a controversial subject in regards to COVID is unique to see. At the same time, helps the reader feel comfortable.

@alex000
The tweets are potentially relatable to many people. And putting a lengthy url in the end is best practice as the link will still work even if cut due to exceeding maximum characters. Well done!
Constructive feedback for future (no need to revise): the first tweet is exceeding maximum 280 characters in 1 tweet even without the url.
However, in practice, we will automatically see it before we post it.
Overall, Great job, Alex! 💜
Hi, how are you doing today? Just a gentle reminder to check in on yourself and give yourself some time for reflection.
#reflection #mentalhealth #rest #takeabreak #youaredoingokay
@NomadAltair
A kind and concisely crafted tweet. Lovely! Just need to do 1 more tweet exercise where we are asked to give example tweet in response to a tweet. 💜
Constructive feedback for future (no need to revise):
add a marketing part every now and then would be best practice in social media marketing, and particularly for this program's exercise. You can add url to any of 7 Cups' page or mention @7cups account.
All the best, Altair!

1. General Hypothetical Tweet
Feeling a lot at once? You don't have to carry it all alone, we're here for you.
Let's meet on the other end & find friends you haven't met yet.

@miraculousSoul53
You made some great points about covid and addressing their feelings. You also did a great job with incorporating keywords in your answer to #1
@miraculousSoul53
1. I like dark-themed backgrounds so this speaks to me beyond the words written. <3
2. Very empathetic!
@miraculousSoul53
Hey really like how you've used image and words to express your idea.
Strengths= Concise. Used tags and personal referral link. Empathetic
In response I think the word limit for reply is 140 characters and yours is crossing that so maybe that is something you can check.
@SoulfullyAButterfly
1. Remember to be kind towards yourself and take the breaks you need. You've got this day ahead!
2. I am so sorry to hear you've been anxious. I can understand the frustration and anxiousness caused from people not distancing. COVID is making a lot of people ill and it is a normal reaction to want to protect yourself. In those situations it seems like you are doing what is best for you to protect yourself.
@wonderfulRainbow817
I loved your answer to the second question! I think you could make your first answer even better by using a few hashtags :)
@SoulfullyAButterfly
1. Create one general hypothetical tweet that is supportive and compassionate.
- Do you want someone to give you #selfcaretips?
- Do you want someone to help you when you are struggling with #mentalhealth?
- Or do you want someone to simply #listen to you?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, consider signing up to be a member of 7 Cups — a free community with listeners ready to lend an ear to listen to you.
2. Respond to this Tweet using the outreaching tips:
I understand where you are coming from — it is hard when people don't respect guidelines. If you'd like someone to listen to you about this, consider joining 7 Cups — a free website with volunteer listeners ready to listen to you!
@SoulfullyAButterfly
1. Create one general hypothetical tweet that is supportive and compassionate.
It can be emotionally exhausting to suppress our excessive baggage as we age. #7Cups is a great place for you to talk to trained listeners, read self-help resources, or share your thoughts with a supportive community. Feel free to reach out. #YouMatter #MentalHealthMatters
2. Respond to this Tweet using the outreaching tips:
I hear you. Our anxiety can get worse when people choose not to follow the SOPs and put others at risk. If you need to pour out in a safe environment, #7Cups has a community for #AnxietySupport at https://www.7cups.com/home/anxiety/
@sshn07
Activity 1: Well written, emphasized on the support of 7Cups. Could have concentrated on the length of the tweet and added more hashtags.
Activity 2: So positive to start with an empathetic phrase, well concluding with 7Cups activity. Could have watched out for the word length and included more hashtags.
@SoulfullyAButterfly
I thought that I would shake things up and make it actually look like a tweet!
I just thought it would be a good idea~!
@jana22sal
Ah this is so nice and creative! 😃👍 There are 2 hypothetical tweets for this exercise. 1 is create a post and the other one is to respond to a tweet in an empathetic way that represent 7Cups. I suppose the example you made is for no. 1?
@SoulfullyAButterfly
