how do I get professional help?

DiamondSpace January 12th, 2020

This may be a long story oof. Props to you if you'll take the time to read it. :)

Basically, I am 100% sure I have anxiety, and possibly depression too. I have anxiety attacks, and I worry excessively about things that don't really matter (ex: answering a question wrong when I'm studying for a test). I hate it.

I really want to seek professional help. Problem is, I'm not sure how.

Our school social worker is not the nicest. Many of my friends have been called down- all say they dreaded the experiance. She asks weird questions, like "What are your plans for killing yourself?" and "Who should I call first- your mom or dad?" So that's a no go. I am NOT visiting her office anytime soon.

My parents are also extremely strict. I don't think I can tell them because I don't think they'd care or understand. Side note: they aren't from the US, and I doubt they know what anxiety and depression are, because there wasn't any talk about that where they came from.

My anxiety's getting worse and worse. I really really want to see a therapist, but I don't know how. I'm not brave enough to announce it to anyone at school or home. I need advice on what to do.

Talk with a listener.

Sorry , uncomfortable talking right now. Welcome.

@DiamondSpace

The social worker asks these questions to determine whether you are in a crisis or not, but I get that you wouldn't want those questions. And depending on your age, your parents would be informed no matter what.

But to get to your question, you could talk to a teacher you feel comfortable with and tell them you don't like the social worker. Or go to your general practitioner or call a crisis hot line if you are in crisis.

But as I said, even if you get in touch with professional help, it's unlikely your parents aren't gonna be informed and involved in the process

@DiamondSpace I agree, this listeners on here can be extremely helpful! It's free and anonymous. It's a good place to start. Also start trying mindful practices to keep you in the moment. When I have a panic attack I stop, take 10 breaths, and feel the sun on my skin or the breeze blowing through a tree, something to ground me to that moment. I also think it's important to tell someone. Ultimately the path is yours, but I urge you to find a path that works for you. Just know you aren't alone. Good luck!

@DiamondSpace obviously there are therapists available here, failing that i went my local doctor and have referral.

@Gujon3073 Unfortunately therapy at 7 Cups is not available for teens, as far as I know, and @DiamondSpace is a teen.

I agree with you that in some places a teen can go to their local doctor to get a referral without telling their parents, but it depends on local laws. It would be OK to call the medical centre anonymously and ask whether this is possible.

Thank you guys for your support. It didn't go that well but at least I tried. I was sent back to class and she ignored me when I said I thought I had anxiety. She called my parents, which I was expecting, and they're supposed to "TaLk To Me AbOuT iT". So that's great.

Now I have to go to her office every Monday for a daily check-in.

I don't know how things are in your country. When I lived in Sweden in highschool we had a wonderful caring therapists. As a foreign student I was welcomed and encouraged to seek counselling for cultural and meteorological adaptation to the northern conditions and life style. She was very soft and nice and caring and everyone appreciated her, but I did not seek her help since I coukd adapt quickly to the weather and culture up north, but my soul hurt that I did not go to her to tell her about my abusive parents, my insecurities, that I was still a child and not a teen...I was sorry I did not seek her help and confort...

I am sorry things are different in your country and it comes down to harsh "parent calling"...maybe it will change next generation for your children to get better therapy care...
