Do you Say Sorry too Much?

PosiPotato January 22nd, 2018

Hi Everyone, PosiPotato here :) I read this recently, and it really made me think... hopefully it does the same for you all here!

Im sorry for bothering you.
Im sorry for crying.
Im sorry for being too much.
Im sorry for not being enough.
.
Sorry. Its a word we use entirely too often to apologize for the space we take up. In the past - and even now sometimes - I apologize too much.

I throw out this word when Im feeling less than or like I take up too much space for any situation. Its time we stop letting anxiety speak for us.

Stop apologizing for baring our souls. For showing vulnerability. For being ourselves. For loving too much, or caring so much. This isnt something to be sorry about - they are qualities we must praise.

If you feel its warranted, always apologize. But, if you have people in your life who make you feel like you have to constantly apologize for being you - say goodbye instead. They dont understand or deserve you in your true form.

Lets start taking up space. Be proud and confident where we are. Dont apologize for you. Celebrate it. ❀️

Well, I'm Canadian, so yes. Sorry. *shrugs*

I did see the meme about saying "Thank You" in some situations instead of "Sorry" and I think there are times where it's good to try to follow that.

Culturally though, I would hate to see some of the sorrys go. As an example, here, if someone bumps into you, it's common courtesy to say sorry. It's more of an acknowledgement.

@AffyAvo I totally get what you are saying Affy! I like some of the sorry's too. I think it is normal for us to express sorry at times, when we believe we have hurt someone else is a good example. On the other side, I don't think it is healthy to say sorry for crying or sorry for feeling :) we are humans and these are natural things we're inclined to feel at some point. If yanno what I mean EH? :')

@PosiPotato

Psh, I apologize when I accidentally run into inanimate objects so I think it's safe to say that I say sorry too much. "Sorry" and "I know it's stupid but..." are two phrases that I could probably stand to use less often.

When someone is mad at me or I just feel like they are I say sorry a lot. Oddly enough this seems to have the effect of the other person often saying something along the lines of it's not really your fault and apologizing to me. Then I feel bad, like I responded the wrong way because obviously I upset them some way in the first place or they wouldn't have been mad and I feel like them apologizing is because I messed up. I also apologize to inanimate objects that I run into or even just almost run into.

@PosiPotato I do say sorry quite often and @NaturalSoul76 knows why πŸ˜… It's an instinct for me. I've always said sorry to avoid conflict and other stuff. Even though it may not always work, I say sorry almost all the time.

RussellsParadox February 4th, 2018

I tried saying sorry to coworkers when I realized that I had offended them, but when my behavior didn't change and I kept on apologizing, saying sorry didn't matter in the end. They still hated me :( Actions do speak louder than words... I guess I apologized without meaning it and they saw through it.

@PosiPotato

Yeah I do. Even when it is not my fault and they are the ones who hurt me. But I value their friendship so I apologize instead so that we can avoid a conflict. Its not too unhealthy I hope. I just hate to be angry :(

Booklover95 February 4th, 2018

I do.

But I'm working on it :)

@NVTita88

I think it's just a stereotype that we're polite, but my frequent apologizing is more due to my depression and anxiety
