Do I need counselling?
I am an only child and my parents are babies of their families (4th and 5th children) and we just don't understand each other. They're typical babies - irresponsible with money and socially outgoing. I am neither. My friends are usually other first borns and my parents friends usually hate me and treat me like a spoiled child when I'm not one.
My parents are so socially outgoing people wouldn't even believe how much trouble they get upto. I am labelled as the bad one in the family every time we're together, mostly at church because they are the most charming people. I own up to my problems but they pretend they have none.
They don't have very many close friends, only their siblings, however I have intense relationships that can either be great or go bad.
The past 5 years I've been quite stuck with my only contact being my parents. They got between me and my friends and I lost them all. They are completely in debt that I couldn't pursue any of my post grad attempts. I am currently doing something because it's the only thing they could afford. I'm reaching the end of studying and I have to start working, I don't love it but I'm getting so anxious thinking about starting this on my own. I don't have anyone to fall back on for support. My parents are going to sell our house again to get out of debt ....they've lost so much to debt it makes me want to run away from them forever even thinking about it. The thought of it is just making me very anxious !
It is a question no one can answer for you, I think. Being stuck like that for the last 5 years makes it a big thing for you to change from studying to a working life, but it's not possible to tell from what you write here whether your anxiety is natural worry and excitement because of the change, or a disability that will hold you back. If you feel it will hold you back, then I agree with you that it seems possible counselling could be worth a try.
