Fears About Food

TheCatastrophizer January 14th, 2020

Recently I've been developing limitations and fears around certain foods.

Some that I used to like I have trouble eating now because of smell or taste so I've been avoiding several foods. Other times, a texture will set me off; I've had to spit out food a couple of times.

I'm trying to push myself a little because I know that the more I give in to the fear, the stronger it gets.

Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, how have you dealt with it?

Hey @TheCatastrophizer! I hope that you're doing well. Sending warm hugs your way *hugs*

I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with food lately. I have had experience with setting limitations on food, but for me, that was a result of a bad experience in my life and so I basically shut down and refused to eat. I've also struggled with eating when it comes to how I look, but that's more eating disorder-like I guess you could say.

The only thing I can really think of as to why you might be developing certain limitations or new dislikes for foods you used to like is because they remind you of something negative, whether this is conscious or subconscious. I feel as though Anxiety Support may not be the right place for this discussion because we lack the tools that a subcommunity like Eating Disorder Support has to provide resources. You might be able to find more people there who have experienced the same thing as you. You can visit the subcommunity by clicking here.

I wish you the best of luck on tackling your phobia. You're being incredibly brave, stay strong!

@Emmur thanks for your encouraging message.

I don't think of visiting the Eating Disorder subcommunity but that's something I will definitely do.

Thank you!

I am sorry that you are struggling with this as I know it can be very frustrating. I have this problem from time to time. Somethings that help me are paying attention to my body when I start to feel like my throat isnt going to swallow the way I want it to I stop eating for a few minutes and drink lots of water. If it is still bothering me I take a break for a little bit if your at home great, if you are at a restaurant I would suggest going to the bathroom or outside for a few minutes and doing some deep breathing. For me it is an anxiety thing but it may be a good idea to let your doctor know you are having difficulty swallowing. I wish you the best of luck! @LenMac10

@LenMac10

I'm having this exact same struggle at the moment, it's all consuming and I completely understand how distressing and frustrating it is. I notice you posted this in January, how are you doing now?

I thought I was going crazy, I have recently developed this phobia. I cant eat foods I used to eat anymore because either the taste or texture makes me feel as if Im having an allergic reaction. This is due to me being allergic to seafood. But recently its gotten really bad. I cant eat hot pockets, I cant eat French fries, and a bunch of other foods. All I really have been able to digest is either Mac and cheese, crackers, and bread. But its gotten to the point where I havent eaten in days. Im so happy to know am not the only one with this fear.

@AlwaysAnxious1998 I'm sorry you're going through it too :( But glad you found a little comfort in knowing you're not alone.

I hope you and I can figure out what this is and how to reverse it. It's no fun not being able to eat freely!

@TheCatastrophizer I completely agree. But we are strong and we will get through this. I too want to be back to normal I miss eating my favorite foods. Hopefully we can both figure it out soon.
