Performance anxiety
Any tips on overcoming performance anxiety? I love singing and musical theatre but hate actually being on the stage
Hello! I'm happy to share some strategies, as I also sing and have an experience with social anxiety.
1. One effective technique, although unconventional, is to adopt a mindset where you perceive yourself as the most knowledgeable person in the room. This approach, suggested by my brother, helps alleviate feelings of inferiority. Essentially, it involves assuming that everyone else lacks understanding while you possess superior knowledge, thereby boosting confidence.
2. Hydrating by drinking water before your performance can be beneficial.
3. Engaging in a series of deep breaths can help regulate and calm your nerves before going onstage.
4. Consider envisioning yourself as the sole individual on stage or regarding the performance. This mental shift can aid in focusing solely on the task at hand, reducing anxiety about the audience or external pressures. Also, try to think about this as the only barrier between you and your dream.
5. Gradually expose yourself to performance situations. Start with smaller, less intimidating settings and work your way up to larger ones.
Try to perform in front of a group of friends and ask them to give a feedback.
6. This particular technique has proven highly effective for me. During my performances, I deliberately select an individual to focus on. Typically, I opt for someone who displays attentiveness, emanates a warm smile, and provides encouraging gestures. This choice significantly enhances my comfort level, allowing me to perform more confidently. I convince my mind that I've one person in the room who's there for me.
Hope this helps! 🌸
(Don't forget that mistakes are okay. I once got disqualified in a singing competition in the very first round due to bad throat but won the same competition next year. It's totally okay to mess up sometimes. That's the only way to learn. Good luck! 🤍)
