Child of parents with addiction

So ever since I can remember my parents had been addicted to drugs. My life was never constant, and now seems like a very distant haze; my parents separating, getting back together, fights, police, confusion, naivety.

I have but a few memories of my family life from my younger years which arent traumatic. (Before I was removed from the situation)

Luckily, my parents were able to pull their lives together when I was around 14, and they quit for good. Although, sobering up isnt just as easy as that.

Ive dealt with severe anxiety and depression, and continue to deal with low self confidence and trust issues.

The reason Im writing this thread is because this has always felt like some kind of secret, something I have to hide. As anyone who has experienced addiction will know, there is a great deal of shame attached to stories like these. This subject is taboo in my house even, everyone just acts like those 14 years didnt happen and ignore the affects that it has had on my entire family.

Addiction is common and prevalent in todays world and shouldnt be as taboo as it now is. Feel free to share your own story, or even just upvote in support đź‘Ť

@tranquilJoy Hi! You have an amazing story! You rose above addcition and that is something to be very proud of! I am an alcoholic so for a long time I was doing nothing but drinking. I have two boys and thankfully they never knew about my drinking problem but they knew that I wasn't mentally there for them most of them time. I always wanted to be alone and I know that bothered them. Luckily I was able to get into a recovery center and I stopped drinking and taking xanax. I made a promise to my boys two years ago that I would get better and that's what I work on everyday in my recovery.

@tranquilJoy Hi! Great post about addiction. I am a recovering alcoholic and I also have two boys. There was a point in my life when all I cared about was alcohol. I let my relationships suffer because of it. About a year and a half ago I went into a recovery center and was able to get sober. Now my relationships with my boys and husband are just incredible. I'm present with them, which is something I never did before. I'm getting so much more love and positive attitudes now that I've changed my life.
