Strengths of Autistic Spectrum Disorder

♾️ When people talk about Autism, the focus is often on the challenges that Autistic people face, yet there are also many strengths and focusing on these can be beneficial.

♾️ By focusing only on challenges, it could cause stigma and limit people's potential.

♾️ Here are some strengths (remember, every Autistic individual is different and has unique abilities, strengths and challenges)


  • Strong long-term memory skills
  • Direct communication
  • Thinking in a visual way
  • Punctuality
  • Honesty
  • Detail oriented
  • Independent thinking (being less concerned about what others may think of them)
  • Loyalty
  • Strong morals
  • Non-judgmental listening
  • Extensive knowledge and/or skill resulting from deep study in favorite topics
  • Understanding rules and sequences
  • Logical thinking that is helpful in decision-making process
  • Intensive focus when working on a favorite activity
  • Being precise and detail oriented.
  • Exceptional honesty and reliability.
  • Being dependable in regards to schedules and routines
  • Able to concentrate for long periods of time when motivated.
  • A drive for perfection and order.
  • A capability for alternate problem solving.


♾️ Research suggests that strengths-based interventions could help autistic people improve their self-esteem, confidence, social life and life skills.

♾️ Understanding, embracing and celebrating different ways of thinking and doing has benefits for everyone.

🌟 Remember, you are important and have many positive aspects about yourself. Despite the challenges, it is important to love and celebrate your Autistic self and all the strengths that come with it. 🌟

For myself, learning to embrace the strengths I have has been particularly useful in my approach to therapy.

For example, my logical thinking can aid me in rationalising negative thoughts, being detail orientation and a deep thinker allows me to fully explore aspects of myself to gain strong insights, direct communication reduces confusion in therapy and ensures safety during difficult moments, and I can learn to apply my non-judgemental way of thinking towards myself.

Of course I still need support and guidance to do so, but by using a strengths-based approach in therapy and adapting the therapy to suit my own needs, I have found there are far more benefits than any other approach (for myself).

We even make use of the extensive knowledge I have on favourite topics to provide examples and aid understanding of difficult concepts and ideas. (eg. Cats! Which are an excellent calming tool too).

This is just one way I have started to learn to appreciate my strengths, doing so can be hard and may take time, but it is important to find ways to see the strengths you have and appreciate the benefits they provide.

(this is not saying to ignore the challenges you may face, but to encourage appreciation of your whole self, difficulties and strengths).

🌈If you are autistic, what strengths can you see in yourself?

I have a lot of loyalty and honesty towards others. Also I am very punctual.

🌈Can you celebrate your own strengths, or the strengths of an Autistic person you know?

You know, I don't really celebrate my strengths because to me it is just how I am but taking a step back I can see how I do celebrate without realizing it of others with Autism. Not myself though.

🌈What interests are you passionate about?

Anything to do with numbers or how things work

Celebrating yourself is definitely tricky, it's something that people tend to not pay attention to in ourselves without realising sometimes, even if we celebrate the same things in others. You deserve to be celebrated just as much as anyone else though ❤️

I find thinking of my strengths really difficult. But I guess my passions are my strengths. I love music and have a degree in it. And I love butterflies and have photographed 39 different species. I guess that's a bit of a strength?

Wow that's definitely a strength! I could probably only identity one or two types of butterfly, and sadly there's not many for me to spot anymore. Your passions are definitely your strengths, it's one of the many things that makes you, you. 🦋

Thank you so much! It is sad to see a decline in butterfly numbers, but there's lots of good going on too! At the end of next month I'm planning on going to try to photograph a chequered skipper. They had completely died out in England, but have recently been reintroduced and so there's a chance to see them again! But it's so nice to start seeing them again this year, it really lifts my spirits to see the peacocks and small tortoiseshells :)

@SleepyShyCat just none this things is like me except I think am not judgmental and am honest but not any other stuff only thing im good at is surfing and skateboarding and play soccer with my brothers is all but don’t understand why I’m not strength most them autistic things

I love this post 💜

I was only diagnosed just over two weeks ago, so I am trying to focus on my strengths. The people I have told have had mixed reactions. Those that know me, happy for me. Those that don't, say I'm sorry to hear that. Why sorry? It's not a disease! It's just who I am. I'm sorry you are neurotypical and don't get to experience the world I get to.


I am a compassionate person! Although I may struggle with empathy, I can still show a lot of compassion, and see the good in everyone, regardless of situation.


I have super bat hearing! I get to hear the sounds of nature, like a whole different world. I get to hear the church bells in the distance. And so much more.


I am creative! I play the flute, and do lots of arts and crafts.

Is it strange that I can't see my own strengths in my autism? I know ow my autism doesn't make me weak or a outcast but I just wear my mask of shame and guilt as I have to mask to make it through but inside I just feel depressed, angry, but also hopeless. It's like as much I want to see the strengths inside me and others... I just can't do it
