New 7 Cups Training: Core Competencies for Peer Workers

Kate February 7th, 2019

Hello 7 Cups Community!

Im excited to announce that 7 Cups will be rolling out a new training for those of you who have direct lived experience with addiction or mental health issues. The training is based on the Core Competencies for Peer Workers that the Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) created. It will teach you on how to become an even more effective active listener to others who have been through similar experiences with substance abuse or mental health struggles.

The training will consist of 12 one-hour training sessions that will teach you how to use your own recovery story to help support others who may be struggling with similar issues.

Click here for an overview of what this training will entail from one of the peer specialists who created it for 7 Cups!

Have you gone through SAMHSA training before? Or are you interested in learning more about this training once it goes live? Please fill up this form to let us know!

Interesting idea!

I notice the thing that looks like it might be a link at the bottom of the document is not a real link, and doesn't work. I assume it was intended to be this: Core Competencies for Peer Workers

The somewhat different boundaries of listeners and peer supporters will be challenging to define and maintain, I suspect, but I look forward to seeing how this piece of work develops. If I can help in any way, let me know Winking

I hope this eventually gets expanded to other lived experiences!

Good point! At first glance, almost none of the material looks like it's limited to what SAMHSA calls "behavioral health". So I'm not sure why the announcement limits it to addiction or mental health issues specifically. 7 Cups' remit is much broader than SAMHSA's, both in terms of the reasons people come here, and in terms of global reach.

@Kate

This sounds absolutely amazing and hits one of the things I am really engaged in. Are there any minimum requirements in order to take part in this or is it enough that we are listeners?
