LGBTQ+ Flags! 🏳‍🌈

The basic rainbow flag, so well known today, but where did it all begin?

In 1978, Gilbert Baker, an artist, openly gay man and a drag queen designed the original version of the rainbow flag with 8 stripes. Each color stripe had it's own meaning: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. This version of the pride flag was first flown June 25, 1978, and those early flags were hand made by volunteers.

However, when mass production started the first changes were made, due to production issues the pink and turquoise stripes were removed and indigo was replaced by basic blue, thus resulting in the contemporary six-striped version (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet). Just as the flag evolved the various colors came to reflect both the immense diversity and the unity of the LGBTQ community. Though it wasn't until 1994 that the rainbow flag was truly established as the symbol for LGBTQ+ pride.

In recent years various further edits and editions of the standard pride flag have been created trying to recognize and include LGBTQ+ people of color, the trans community, as well as intersex people.
