Time to Get Out the Pretty Papers… World Card Making Day is Oct 1!

EmotionsListener October 1st, 2022

Hello all you creative hobbyists! Did you know that today is “World Card Making Day?!” That’s right, it’s time to break out the cardstock and decorative papers and turn them into meaningful cards for family and friends!

New to card making? Don’t worry, it’s easy to get started! While there are all kinds of fancy and tempting tools on the market to step up your card making, even with a few simple items you can be well on your way to making something wondrous!

Basic card making supplies:

  • Cardbase

    • Cardstock - While any paper will do in a pinch, having a base of cardstock can give you a good foundation for all your card making. Cardstock comes in varying weights, heavier is often harder to find and more expensive but often reduces “card sagging.”

    • Card blanks - some craft stores will even have presized and folded card blanks that often come with matching envelopes that you can use instead.

  • Decorative/Assorted paper

    • Once you have a base, the real fun starts with other decorative and colourful papers, typically trimmed into various shapes and applied on the base.

    • Any kind of paper can be a great source for these kinds of additions:

      • Have some wrapping paper you really like or that you are using to wrap the gift and want your card to coordinate?

      • Maybe you have a colouring page or image you want to somehow incorporate into your design?

      • This can also be a great time to pull out scraps of paper to add little pops of colour.

  • Trimming accessories:

    • Good scissors - Good scissors can make a huge difference when cardmaking, I find I like to have a small set of “detailing” scissors, they are tiny and make small precise cuts.

    • Cutting mat and associated trimmers - these can also work well for detailed trimming, or using a ruler to make long straight edges.

    • Paper cutter - There are various types of these available on the market portable to dedicated large and heavy ones - if you don’t have one you don’t really need one, but if you do have one it can be a go to when card making!

  • Ruler - this can help make sure lines are straight when drawing or cutting even when folding.

  • Adhesive - There are a lot of options on the market, from specialized tape adhesives for card making, glue dots, hot glue or the good old trusty standby liquid glue or one of my favourites, a simple glue stick.

  • Decorative pens, pencils, markers etc. - Here it’s up to you and your imagination to use whatever combination of artistic media you have to add some colour to your work!

  • Stickers, glitter, and other decorative elements - Use your imagination, maybe add some bling!

….And most importantly?!

  • Your imagination and creativity!!!

@EmotionsListener What a brilliant post! I tend to make all my own cards and have been asked to make for others too! Your post has lots of helpful tips, thankyou!

  1. How do you feel when you get (or give) handmade cards?

I love it! I know how much it takes to get a card that is handmadde. From the splodges of paint from the youngest to really arty cards from the eldest.

  1. What is your favourite reason or occasion to give (or get) cards?

Christmas and Birthday! Birthdays are special I think.

  1. New to card making? Experienced? What is your favourite part of the process? Do you have a favourite tool or technique?

Seeing how the watercolor turns out lol!

I'm sure others appreciate your talents when you make cards for them, be it those you give to them or those they will give to others. Recognizing the effort and care involved in any handmade card or gift can certainly mean a lot both to the giver and receiver.

Christmas and birthday cards are definitely occasions where cards are fun to make and give! Although watercolour cards sound lovely, do you ever do wax resist for that?

Thank you for joining in and sharing your card making with us all!

@EmotionsListener

This is such a fun post!

So, you’ve got your supply list, will you take some time this weekend to try your hand at card making? Yes, I'd like to make a hand made card today. Why not? It doesn't take much time to make a handmade card that expresses your gratitude for someone. Stay tuned for a handmade card that I'll be making later today 😉

How do you feel when you get (or give) handmade cards?

americas-got-talent-agt.gif

What is your favourite reason or occasion to give (or get) cards? Birthdays, farewells, Valentine's Day, exam wishes, anniversaries, and Christmas.

New to card making? No

Experienced? Yes

What is your favourite part of the process? The message I write in the card. I really take time to write it, and pay less attention to the decor part.

Do you have a favourite tool or technique? I just go with the flow and use what I have. None of the cards I make look the same. The only difference is that I don't use crayons to make cards these days.

"This is such a fun post!" - I can tell you enjoyed it, I seem to have spied a card you made somewhere else... 😉

Glad you took some time to use your creative energy to make something lovely that will warm the hearts of others. I'm sure others will love receiving it as much as you would!

Sounds like you like to give cards for any occasion you can think of!

The messages within a card are something that probably take me as long as, if not longer than, creating the rest of the card! I find I really want to write something from the heart and meaningful when I make cards.

It seems to me each of your cards is another unique masterpiece that grows out of your heart as you create it! I wonder if you ever make cards for yourself?

Thank you so much for joining in.

@EmotionsListener

Wonderful post about a lovely craft.

Hand-making a card is the best way to convey appreciation, as you took the time to think and make the card, not just buy it.

I don't reach such heights but try to give them a "handmade" touch...

- How do you feel when you get (or give) handmade cards?

Get: Warmth, appreciation, gratitude. Give: Happiness

- What is your favorite reason or occasion to give (or get) cards?

Birthdays.

- Do you have a favourite tool or technique?

I hand-write with a good fountain pen on heavy cardstock paper. I have used Micron pens too.

Other systems: (might not count as "hand" made)

I draw e-cards with Sketchbook and send them via email or whatsapp

Or with Hallmark Card Studio, and print with color inkjet on heavy glossy paper.

@HealingTalk

The time and effort involved in making cards can indeed convey so much more than words alone. Not to mention it's sure to be unique, and not the same card they gave you last year! (Oh and yes I've had that happen more than once.)

I'm glad that you are able to experience the joy of handmade cards both as a giver and a receiver.

Birthdays are definitely a time where cards seem important and meaningful.

I think even digital assistance in making cards would still count as one you made, the tools may be fancy but the creativity and sentiment still come from you after all. Makes me wonder if you have a favourite card you've made for another?

Thank you for joining in, sharing your thoughts, and reminding us that handmade perhaps should be called 'heart-made' instead!

Thank you for your kind words!

You never cease to surprise me by your creativity, your thoughtful reflections, and your dedication to making everyone feel great.

You are truly a very special person...

Anyway.

I like to do "video cards" as well for birthdays.

Here is one:

And thank you for your kind words! I would love to see an example of one of your video cards, unfortunately it would appear the one you posted may be private, though we would also want to be careful about any offsite etc. But I'm sure it's beautiful.

Oh, you deserve all the kind words in the world !!

Sorry for the sloppy sharing! I would like to correct it but I am in a hotel, far from my PC for some days. I took precautions to block offsites but might have failed. I will use an anonymous video sharing service next time, but those can't be embedded (which is prettier).

It's a personalized whiteboard animation. Nothing fancy. I send frequently those to friends and family and they like them...

Sending you more nice words from here!

So many good tips! I'm certain to be using a few soon with some family occasions coming up 😸

How do you feel when you get (or give) handmade cards?

-Receiving hand made cards always feels warm and fuzzy! It seems much more personal and makes me happy that the person took the extra time to make me something so sweet ❤️

What is your favourite reason or occasion to give (or get) cards?

-No reason is the best reason! I love giving out random cards of appreciation to people, who deserve to be shown love just because I want to show them love. My friends are always receiving little handmade cards 😸

New to card making? Experienced? What is your favourite part of the process? Do you have a favourite tool or technique?

-Not new and not experienced, just happily experimenting with the craft 😄 My favourite part of the process is when the recipient of the card receives it and I get to see their smiles

@SleepyShyCat

I've now decided to call all 'handmade' cards, heart-made, and yes those warm fuzzies are wonderful!

Random cards that say "hey, I was just thinking about you" can be among those that make us feel special for sure. Like no social obligation or date on the calendar told you to give them, it was simply your heart wanted to. Sounds like you have some lucky friends!

I would probably put myself in that same category, not new, but not an expert by any means, just someone who loves to craft and enjoys cardmaking as yet another outlet for that creative energy! As for the smiles they create - that indeed is a wonderful part.

So, do you give cards to cats as well? I wonder if they would want one made with cardboard and catnip?

Thank you for joining in and sharing your creativity with us!

  1. How do you feel when you get (or give) handmade cards?

I feel really proud of myself because I put a lot of effort into making them and it's really fun to make them.

  1. What is your favourite reason or occasion to give (or get) cards?

I actually give handmade cards for every holiday to my family.

  1. New to card making? Experienced? What is your favourite part of the process? Do you have a favourite tool or technique?

I'm experienced as I've been card making since I could write/draw at a young age. I use a lot of colored markers/pens in my cards.

@chocolatebunnyy

I'm glad you are proud of your work, it's nice when we get to do something fun that also will be valued and appreciated by others!

Sounds like you are a card expert for sure, making them for every holiday!

As for using coloured markers and pens, do you find you write up multiple 'copies' before the final draft? I've noticed I have started to use an "applied" piece of white(or other colour) paper for text so I can write it out then glue it onto the card base after I write it - that way if I make a mistake I just use a new piece of paper and try again instead of worrying about the card I worked so hard to make!

Thank you for joining in and I'd love to see more of your cardmaking skills!
