The Gratitude Project: List 3 Things That You Are Grateful For...
by LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS

...See more Hi there, Today we will learn a little more about gratitude and learn how to express this. Studies have shown that if you practice daily gratitude practice, it can make you feel happier and improve your health. What is Gratitude? Gratitude is the expression of appreciation for what one already has and not ones future desires or hopes. It is generated from within. This social emotion strengthens relationships, and its roots run deep in evolutionary history, and it stems from the survival value of helping others and being helped in return. Studies show that specific areas of the brain are involved in experiencing and expressing gratitude. Brain scans of people assigned a task that stimulates gratitude show lasting changes in the prefrontal cortex that heighten sensitivity to future experiences of gratitude, thus feeling happier and healthier. Please list 3 things that you are grateful for and share daily if you feel comfortable to do so!

December 25th, 2024
...See more Hi everyone! Happy 1st December and time goes so quickly. I'm excited to start a 25-day challenge focused on gratitude, self-care, and personal growth for 2024. Those of you may remember that we did this last year and as it was so popular it might be useful to continue. This journey is for anyone looking to nurture their mental health, cultivate positive and perhaps even new habits, and find more joy in their daily lives. Why 25 Days? * Small Steps, big impact: We'll break down larger goals into manageable daily tasks. * Habit formation: 25 days is a useful time frame to establish new habits. * Community support: We'll be here to encourage and support each other throughout the challenge. What to Expect: * Daily prompts and engaging therapeutic content: Each day, we'll share prompts related to gratitude, self-care, or personal growth. * A safe sharing space: Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, and progress in the comments. * Community support: Let's create a positive and supportive space for everyone. Let's Get Started! We are excited that you're on this journey with us at 7 Cups! Remember: * Be kind to yourself: It's okay to miss a day or two or even five. Just pick up where you left off and all are welcome to participate! * Progress, not perfection: Focus on making small improvements each day. * Celebrate your wins: No matter how small, acknowledge your achievements. 🌻 Let's make this a month of positive change and it’s okay if you are not feeling as positive as you would like to be. We understand that sometimes no matter what you believe, the holiday season can be challenging for many reasons, we are here for you and you may find some of our prompts and content helpful.  Day 1: What is one thing you’ve done recently to take care of your mental health and well-being, and how did it make you feel? Managing expectations towards others
by amiablePeace77

...See more Let’s start with a brief story about expectations She was angry, very disappointed and in disbelief about what just happened!  “I’ve always supported her, stood by her side and now she goes against me in front of everyone!” “I’m stupid, nothing I do is right and they treat me like I am worthless!” “I deserve this” “I don’t know what to do, what I want. How can she leave me now?! I need her to be here and fix this situation!” The end What could have gone wrong here? What could be the problem with having expectations? Here are some things to consider * Don't assume that everyone will agree with you every time. The majority of people have their own thoughts and opinions. Expecting others to consistently agree with yours is unrealistic. * When you criticize yourself, don't expect other people to acknowledge you. If you don't treat yourself with respect, you can't expect others to respect you. * When someone is ready to leave, don't expect them to stay. Letting go can be hard but it can also be the best for everyone. * Don’t expect others to be mind readers and know what you think. It does not work. Begin by being truthful with yourself about your thoughts, feelings, and desires. After that, you can begin telling people about it. * When you are unable to solve problems for yourself, don't expect others to do it for you. There are times we simply need to reach out for professional support. Participation question: * When things do not turn out the way you hoped, do you stay calm or experience resentment? * How are you dealing with feelings of resentment? Helpful Videos: Relax... The Power of Forgiveness
by amiablePeace77

...See more Most of us will know the case where you feel angry because someone has wronged you and you suffer from the consequences. There might be thoughts like “Why me?” “How could they have done this?” “It’s not fair!”  or even “I want revenge!” "Forgiving a person who has wronged you is never easy, but dwelling on those events and reliving them over and over can fill your mind with negative thoughts and suppressed anger" Excerpt from The Power of Forgiveness  [https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/the-power-of-forgiveness] Doing little things in daily life is one approach to become more at ease with forgiveness. Often people do us wrong with things that are not personal like cutting a line. It’s important to notice that the act was not intentionally directed at us!  Sometimes people do us wrong intentionally though and it can help to recall a time when you treated someone harshly and were forgiven. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting! However, the act of forgiveness is healing, it means you put down the burden you carry. It can be very difficult in some situations though where serious harm was caused. In such instances a person might benefit from professional help in order to prevent suffering from the traumatic experience for the rest of their life.  Participation question: * What kind of thoughts are going through your mind when someone wronged you and you have to bear the consequences of it? * How are you usually dealing with such thoughts and what helps you to find peace again? * What helps you to forgive yourself? Ageism -"I Can't Get No Respect"

...See more Ageism -"I Can't Get No Respect"   https://text.npr.org/nx-s1-5234649 [https://text.npr.org/nx-s1-5234649] Ageism — discrimination and prejudice based on someone's age — is so ingrained in society that most of us don't notice it. Yet "we all face the consequences, and we all have a role in fixing it. Experts say that fighting ageism isn't only important to create an equitable and fair society, it also helps all of us live longer, healthier — even more fulfilling — lives. Yale professor Becca Levy studies the psychology of aging. Her research [https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/psp-832261.pdf] found that people who had positive beliefs [https://text.npr.org/2022/06/24/1107456623/dont-let-ageism-define-you-how-to-enjoy-life-at-every-stage] about aging bounced back more effectively from illnesses and other setbacks than those who had negative perceptions about what it meant to be older. Kindness boosts our Well-Being
by amiablePeace77

...See more Kindness provides many benefits to a human being. When I am kind to others, I just feel better inside, it’s like a warmth going through my whole body which opens my heart. It even puts a smile on my face.  When you’re kind to others your serotonin levels rise (the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of satisfaction and well-being).  Research [https://text.npr.org/nx-s1-5233123] suggests that when we make acts of kindness a habit, it's also good for our health. Being nice to others can be one of the easiest and quickest, most inexpensive ways to keep anxiety at bay.  Kindness, however, does not mean always being there for others when they want you, which can lead to being taken for granted in the long run. It’s okay to define boundaries and important to recognize that being helpful doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself  Participation question: * Are you helping because you want to, or because you feel you have to? * Are you prioritizing others’ needs over your own well-being? * How do you show kindness to others? Boosting our brains to prevent brain "rot"
by amiablePeace77
Last post

...See more Do you find yourself sitting too long at your computer, feeling eye strain and maybe a stiff neck? Too much screen time can impact our health in many ways, not only eye strain and neck pain but we might disconnect from people around us which can lead to social isolation, and in some cases, it may even cause harm to our brains. The danger of consuming too much online media is that you can’t see what’s happening in your brain as you’re staring at the screen.  "Brain rot" is the Oxford word of the year for 2024, and it's pretty much what it sounds like: a perceived mental decline from consuming too much online media. Climate change and mental health and well-being
by amiablePeace77
Last post

...See more How do you feel when temperatures are very high, far higher than what you are used to, and you still need to do your daily routine? Many people feel stressed and anxious when it is too hot outside. Too much heat triggers anxiety and increases cortisol, the stress hormone and can also make people more depressed or irritable.  Extreme heat days are an inevitable consequence of a warming world, and things are not cooling down. The IPPC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change *) revealed that rapidly increasing climate change poses a rising threat to mental health and psychosocial well-being; from emotional distress such as anxiety, depression, grief, and other more serious problems. But it is not only about heat, it’s also about the increase of events caused by global warming like storms that have been of a stronger magnitude than usual. Furthermore, extreme heat also makes air quality worse by raising the risk of fires which produce smoke and by droughts that increase airborne dust particles.  Here are a few points to prepare yourself for extreme weather events: * Stay informed through local news and weather reports for warnings about extreme weather events; plan your day accordingly. * Check alerts about travel conditions before heading out in extreme weather events. * Check your home how it retains or loses heat and make alterations where possible (example black out curtains to reduce heat from the sun) * Have an adequate supply of nonperishable food in your pantry like canned goods * Have a week or more of water in storage containers * Eat healthy food to reduce your risk of chronic diseases * Create a coping tool box (collection of skills, techniques, items, and other suggestions that you can turn to when you start to feel anxious or distressed) * Have a Go Bag [https://www.pelican.com/us/en/discover/pelican-flyer/post/go-bag-checklist--what-to-pack-in-your-go-bag/] with things you may need if you have to evacuate suddenly Dealing with natural challenges requires good planning ahead, patience, acceptance, self-reflection, and mindfulness exercise [https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=2a0991cd964d94b04082c3d8651e23d43f9bab68beb6d0c8260bcadbdcd2b729JmltdHM9MTczMTgwMTYwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=058685c7-5112-6098-3809-9742507e619b&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2lraWhvdy5oZWFsdGgvRGVhbC13aXRoLUNoYWxsZW5nZXMtTWluZGZ1bGx5&ntb=1]s. ...See more Most people have heard that using the internet can lead to issues and even dependency.  Anything can be harmful if used incorrectly or excessively. There are some good sides to the internet as well though. Internet use may be associated with higher levels of life satisfaction, better self-reported health, and fewer symptoms of depression among adults aged over 50 in 23 countries, suggests a study published [https://doi.org/10.1038/s41562-024-02048-7] in Nature Human Behaviour. *  Excerpt MedicalXpress [https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-11-internet-access-adults.html] Internet use [https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5877025/] has a positive association with mental well-being among retired Americans aged 50 or older, as it reduces isolation and the probability of depression very significantly. Benefits of slower eating

Last post

...See more When I was working it became normal for me to eat my meals within the shortest time. Usually it took me only a few minutes and it became a habit to have conversations about work whilst eating. I guess you can imagine that my digestion was not very good and that I hardly enjoyed the food even if it was consumed in a nice restaurant. My focus was sadly on my work. In the evening, at home, I did the same thing as at work - I ate very fast. Our health can be significantly impacted by the speed at which we consume.  Eating too quickly can result in a number of health problems. Here are some examples: * Our bodies might not register fullness, resulting in overeating * Poor digestion * Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke* * Decreased enjoyment of food At one point I felt so bad about my eating that I looked for ways to eat more slowly and something that helped me was to eat with chopsticks and later on I learned about mindful eating.  Participation questions: * Do you eat your meals quickly or do you take your time and appreciate the flavours in each bite? * What helps you to eat slower? ...See more You may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep for a number of reasons, and these issues could arise at any time of the year. There are many problems that may prevent someone from falling and staying asleep such as worries, room temperature, caffeine and alcohol to mention just a few. However, a major issue can also be a melatonin deficiency (sleep hormone). The production of melatonin generally decreases with age but can be also influenced by too little light exposure.  Common signs of melatonin deficiency * Excessive daytime sleepiness * Nocturnal awakenings * Circadian rhythm disruptions Some research says that adding melatonin to your diet such as tart cherries or walnuts may improve sleep.  Participation question How often do you have trouble sleeping?
