Anger is like pee. Sometimes you want to hold it till you have an appropriate place to deal with it and when you do make sure you don’t get it all over yourself or anyone else.

Suppressing it for most of my life made me dangerous to myself and others. It's dosen't go away on its own no matter how much time passes. I am still angry about things that happened 45 yes ago.

Is it better to suppress anger or to embrace it? What can anger tell us?

I've had a habit of suppressing my anger all my life.  Things would happen at work - unfairness of various sorts, favoritism, etc.  I would hold in my anger until I blew up.  I got fired a couple of times because of it.  It's bet to let anger out in an "acceptable" way as it comes, so it doesn't build up.  I think holding it in is unhealthy, and blowing up is unhealthy.  I have to find a good way to express it.  I think I've been filled with rage since my early childhood over what happened to me.

@WharfRat

I can only imagine how rough it must have been for you carrying that anger for such a long time. Keeping your temper in check can be challenging and the best is to get away from the situation that is triggering you. Some people find it helpful to express their anger in art or exercise to release anger energy. Deep breathing or counting backwards exercises to ground yourself can also be very helpful. Do you have someone to talk to for support atm?

@WharfRat

It can feel heavy to deal with those emotions alone. Sorry that you do not have anyone to talk to. Please remember sharing circle is open 24/7 and that you can always connect to a listener for a 1:1 chat too.

Would say not to suppress. As it emotions. Kept inside will bottle up one day and be like volcano.

@amiablePeace77 ok after reading the others responses, I've learnt that is it not good to ignore it must be dealt with carefully and safely. Me though, for some strange reason, I don't get angry. Everything but anger, not sure why🤔🤔 and anger in others is my biggest fear. So let it out safely would be a good idea if I ever really feel it ❤

Thanks for questions, and making me think ❤❤gives you a giant tiny hug ❤❤ how do you handle it ami?

@Tinywhisper11

Some people substitute anger with other emotions like sadness or depression. Do you think that could be the case with  you?

When I get angry I usually exercise or clean! It helps to turn the possible harmful energy into something useful.

@amiablePeace77  Is it better to suppress anger or to embrace it? What can anger tell us?

I think it is better to avoid the thoughts that lead to anger by using mindful awareness.

Anger teaches me that my views on what is happening are not accurate and I hae unrealistic expectations.

Hi, Ami,

Some things, I don't let them bother me anymore.  Some things I have had to let go because they are in the past and there is nothing I can do about it.  Other things, I stop and think about the best way to proceed with it, then act accordingly.

@amiablePeace77 I think anger tells us that something's not right. Maybe someone did or said something that hurt us or crossed a boundary

I don't think it should be surpressed - it's not healthy. It eats away at you and builds up until you blow up or get resentful and bitter. Or take it out on yourself. But I do it anyway for a number of reasons. I was never allowed to express anger growing up and was never taught how to express it in a healthy way. Or any anger I expressed was met with someone else's bigger anger - because how dare I be angry about something

@mytwistedsoul

When growing up it is very important to learn to express emotions especially anger in a healthy way so that the adult person knows how to handle it. I'm very sorry to hear that you were not given that opportunity and can only imagine how scared, frustrated and maybe even helpless you felt when you where confronted with more anger by other people. I hope coming here will help you to learn to befriend your emotions and also understand the roots of your anger and manage it in a healthy way.
