Back in my day, we… had larger families, used appliances that were not electric, learned more at school, and wrote a ton of correspondence. One could hop on a moving bus. People were called by their titles rather than by their (first) names. Girls learned to curtsey and boys hand-kissing. Family reunions happened at least three times a year. Children were sent away to stay with relatives on long holidays. You went to the river to swim next to the pissing cows (downstream was warmer). No seatbelts in cars, so children loose in the backseat except for the one who sat between Papa and Maman in the front. Also.... household help.

Things were much different back then. Today, nobody would really attempt to jump on a moving bus anymore! Some things were better others not so much.

I believe people spent more time outside, kids were more exploring the outdoors instead of spending most of the time in front of the computer screen. In my opinion that was better.

Yes, it makes a lot of sense if there is an actual outdoor area. Since I was raised in Paris, which is not really known for a lot of green outdoor space, we were taken to a park twice a week only, a 15-minute walk away and with supervision from nannies. We did not have a TV at home (lots of parents were against it at the time, just like those of these days who try to control "screen time".  My siblings and I read a lot or played cards or listened or practised music instead. We did not know any children in our neighbourhood we could play with anyway.

I think growing up in a big city like Paris is very different from growing up on the countryside and people know each other less.  You must have been looking forward to those days in the park to play and enjoy the green surroundings.

Well, we were not allowed to walk or play on the grass. There were some (pay) swings so we mostly ran around the alleys and lanes. Sometimes a treat was to walk all the way to the park area of the Champs-Élysées and either sit at a puppet show (Guignol), or have a ride on the merry-go-round there.

Another thing I remember is that children were required to stay quiet so as not to disturb grown-ups. There were benches, but the individual ironwork chairs themselves could be used for a fee. If you lost your ball in the grass,  you worried that a guard would whistle at you when you retrieved it.

The thing is that Paris (like a lot of other places) was not built with the same urban planning ideas as - say - American towns. The city was never destroyed by fires or wars but was largely rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century with little thought to leaving green spaces, as they did in London pr Berlin, for instance. If you lived in the very centre, there were very few green areas and only wide avenues and boulevards had rows of trees. No back streets and lanes between buildings. But we did not know any better and were happy with our lot anyway.

I believe as much as Paris is known for its "flair" it's hard to grow up for a child without any green playgrounds and develop a connection to nature.

@amiablePeace77 Just a remendier that “Back in my day, we…”?, is usually the beginning of some racist, homophobic or sexist rant. This is a kinda cringe worthy prompt for those of us who are usually on the other end if that statment.

Back in my day, we…didn’t do anything like we do now. Now everything’s in a tech and digital world where everything except cooking, cleaning, washing dishes, and things like that are all done digitally now. It’s normal now.

But in my day literally everything was done the old school way. I’m talking about the pre internet era of living.

Things like video calls and AIs were not heard of. Music had to be bought via cassette tapes or CDs at stores, movies were bought or rented instead of being streamed, online communities like this did not exist so you had to meet/talk/socialize in person all the time or talk on the phone.

@akunknown

I believe there was much more interaction in person, but it was also more difficult for people who could not find people around them to socialize. The internet offers more options like coming here.

I remember well those days with cassette tapes. We exchanged tapes in those days or copied them for a friend.

Oooo!! This actually feels so alive!! Nice prompt🌻🌈

Back in my day, I remember how much fun and uncontrolled laughter I had with my friends! We used to play games all sweating, in dust and deeply committed to not being tired of anything!! Time changed and we switched to looking for peaceful serene places, calming low-fi music, cherishing humble tunes and subtle conversations!!

But both times have their true importance!! And both times feel so good to think about!!

I truly miss them badly!! 🥺

When we get older most of us look for more peaceful serene places and enjoy calmer, often more deeper conversations. What do you feel is missing in your time right now that you could make happen?

@Letusbefriends  im curious how you didn’t need to worry about money? It sounds as though you were dependent on someone else to provide that, or else you were ok without a roof over your head.  Not judging.  Other than being a child with parents providing, I just never had that mindset that I didn’t need to make money for just basic needs.  ☺️   It’s true not having to worry about money would be nice though.

@SparklySeas49 - Ok so I'll set the context here. I am from India and the time I was mentioning was my childhood. What you said is very much right that one should think of earning even in their teenage. However, we don't have that concept fully grown into the society yet. Plus I come from a small town. So there, this thought is still far more remote. Your cost of living is minimal. Most of the population have their own house, so no need to worry about rent. They don't use credit card.. This all add up.. Hope this clarifies.. :)
