Fear of the Future, Where to Retire

cannotstopworry March 18th

Hello 50+ Community:

I took a long hiatus from my professional career due to work load and job stress. I returned to my career due to my spouse's recent layoff. Thankfully, he's since gotten a job. I stay in this job to supplement the income.

I wake up with fears of my work load and the unknown future. We don't have local family and friends for support. We have tried to make new friendships, i.e. church/hobby groups, etc, but to no avail. We live in the region where people are known for being 'aloof'. Most confuse 'friends' with 'acquaintances'

7 Cups has been of tremendous help to me in opening a line of meaningful conversations. Thanks for 'listening'.

I can only imagine how hard your mornings must be being afraid what amount of work is waiting for you. You can only do what you can! Often we believe we need to fulfill the demands set to us even if we know it's too much. Could you talk about your work with your boss, let him know that you feel it's simply too much or is your boss not approachable?

This is a link to a self help guide How to Deal with Work Related Stress https://www.7cups.com/work-related-stress/. I hope it helps.

Sorry to hear that you're living in an environment where people are rather aloof than warm and distant. I hope that coming here will help you to feel welcomed and appreciated. Many users make 7cups friends and meet regularly in open chats or discussions.

Hi everyone, I'm new to 50+, and looking forward to learning and sharing. I have been worrying about work and plans to retire in 8 years. It's very scary as I don't have any savings and still working at a job that is fast-paced environment. I have to be alert all the time and no room for mistakes as it has a ripple affect. I have been working for over 45 years and I don't have the age yet to retire. I am obsessed with checking my statements on the Social Security site and comparing early retirement or delayed retirement at 67 years old just to get an amount that I can live on. Along with my 401b which is very little now as I am not contributing as my job matches a certain percentage. Otherwise, I can't retire at 65, so I have to mentally prepare myself to accept 67 years old. It's not easy working in a fast-paced environment but I do my best. I just want to retire but feel uncomfortable financially. My adult child and grandson are all living together to help support each other especially with the cost of rent being extremely high. So this arrangement is feasible but with a few adjustments with this arrangement. It's not easy as I am still providing financial support which I am happy to do because this is my child and grandchild and they really need help. So this is one of the reasons why I could take early retirement however I will not be able to assist them financially. As I get older a fast-paced environment is not for me. It's very stressful and I have anxiety. It's not easy but what choice do I have but to make the best of this until I can retire in 8 years.

Welcome to the 50+ sub-community. I am so very sorry to reply only now.

What you describe sounds like a very difficult situation.  Working in a fast-paced environment can take a toll on your health if you're not able to cope with it and 8 years are a long time. I can understand that you want to support your children but I wonder whether there is another way so no one needs to suffer. Do you think that talking to your gp and maybe occupational health department could give you some ideas?
