Aging

lovingLychee115 February 28th, 2022

Aging and being an empty nester has been so challenging.I divorced about 25 yrs ago and put all my focus on my kids .

(maybe it was easier to just do that ,maybe I’ve lied to myself all these years about focusing only on being a mom and raising my kids . Maybe I just used it as an excuse).

Now it’s years later the job is done they are on their own and I’m absolutely lost. No real friends no partner and I’m in my sixties now.

The isolation is driving me crazy and making me depressed so bad I had to flee to a family member to stay with so I would be alone and get worse and worse, and more sympathetic. It’s horrible. Any suggestions on how to make new friends during a pandemic I would be greatful. My mental health is really suffering at the moment. I just feel useless in the world and washed up.

like I’m just taking up space☹️

I understand that feeling of not being useful. I had a trauma occur that upended my life. I had to leave my job and my kids are adults. I still have a spouse but I felt like " now what?"

It's taken me 4 years of therapy to get where I'm at( it's far from perfect) but I rekindled a couple old work friendships. We get together maybe 2-3 times a month and I go to therapy weekly. I also volunteered at a retirement home and helped out . It's tough during Covid but when it's open I go help out. I also joined a gym. I found some good hobbys for when I need to focus, painting , gardening, walks in the park etc I love the beach too. I also love reading so a library is great place to hang out or a book store

Try to write about what you like to do and cultivate something related to that. ( I love animals too and would love to volunteer at a shelter at some point)

It was kind of an identity crisis for me but I'm not giving up on my dreams of a happy life.

Maybe one of my kids will have a child too. That would be fun.

I think life has alot of ups and downs and you can't always predict what's coming so do the best you can not to panic and focus on your needs.

Trust me I've been through h*ll these last couple years and I didn't think I was going to make it but I'm still here.

Your not alone and I wish you the best. ABB 💜
