My dog passed away
I had to say goodbye to my oldest dog on Monday. He was also my first pet as an adult. He was with me through divorce, living alone, family problems, falling back in love, getting married... so much. He was there for everything for almost 14 years.
And no he's just gone.
It happened so fast. Despite skin allergies and a heart murmur, he was always really healthy. Until right before Thanksgiving. I had him into work ( I work in a clinic) several times, and then he seemed to get better.
He gave us the holidays.
Right after Christmas, he seemed ouchy, which he sometimes was. We gave him pain meds and couldn't tell if he was so doped up from the meds or something else.
On New Year's Eve, I realized his stomach was distended.
On New Year's Day we took him to the emergency clinic. They did bloodwork and urine testing and an x-ray.
On Monday, we took him to the other clinic for an ultrasound. And they told us he had cancer and was dying. And we had to say goodbye.
I am so devastated. It hurts so much. It happened so fast. I've just been sitting at home crying. I just don't know what to do. I just look at pictures of him and cry and miss him.
How can I move on?
@MissingPiece888 oh I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you a hug! I know that words won't make much difference, but you are not alone. I have had dogs all my life and I know how devastating it can be when that awful time comes. They are more than a pet it is like losing a member of the family because that is what they truly are.
I am writing this as my dog is at my feet, making sure I don't go anywhere without them waking up. I would like to hear more about your beloved dog if you would like to share? Maybe it would help a little? Take care and be kind to yourself right now.

Thank you for your kind comment.
Monte kind of ruined me for dogs. He was my first, and he was pretty perfect. He was such an easy puppy and I just assumed that they were all that way - unfortunately I found out with my second, Roscoe, that that isn't totally true and that Monte was the special case.
He was such a sweet boy and didn't want for much. He loved fries, his pink ball, and licking his dad's feet. He let me carry him like a baby, and he when he would get riled up he'd try to dig right through the sheets in the bed.
Monte gave sweet, sloppy kisses, loved being in the sun (even though it made him squint), and he was terrible on walks because he would veer back and forth, needing to sniff and pee on everything.
He had a huge nose, flipped out ears, and the sweetest eyes I have ever seen. And I miss him more than I can even put into words. I miss him so much.
@MissingPiece888 Monte sounds a wonderful dog, friend, companion and buddy! I hope that you are allowing your feelings to lead you where you need to be to heal and learn to love the memories that you will cherish.
Monte sounds a wonderful puppy too! I have had quite a few over my years and puppies can be so many things, I have had two deaf puppies and they were a real challenge, I have had puppies that had hidden illness that took its toll, But I remember every single one with love, their story, the way they changed my life and the way I changed theirs. So many woof stories!
Thank-you for sharing a little about Monte.

@MissingPiece888 I recently lost my first dog ever, he became 12 and a half years old. I can absolutely relate. I grew up with him, so I was really sad.
He didn't have cancer, he had severe arthritis and several other issues in his back. I had to make the decision to do what was best for him and say goodbye. All the vets said that there was to much damage, the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye.😭
Now it's been about 6 weeks, give or take. So how do you move on? You take things one day after the other. You go on living. Of course you will miss your dog, I miss mine. But with time it hurts less. The first couple of days I could cry just thinking about my dog. With time it hurt less. Today when I think about him, sure I miss him but it doesn't hurt as much.
One thing you can do which helps, when you feel it's appropriate and when you feel ready. Is to get a new dog. I got a puppy last week because I didn't want to be without a dog. I miss my first dog and I will never forget him. My new puppy makes me smile and helps me feel better. Getting a new dog can help.
Take some time to mourn him. Remember the good times, the adventures and all the fun you had. Something I tell myself, our dogs may be gone but never forgotten.❤️😊
I'm so sorry for your loss. I bet you gave that dog all the love and a comfortable home. I agree with what another person said about getting another dog. After you've mourned this one of course. You could give another special doggy a great home ❤
@MissingPiece888
sorry to hear your beloved pet passed! I’ll tell you what i do and what I tell everyone else, get the EXACT same type of dog that passed away! Even tho it’s not your old doggy, each time you look at the puppy that is literally exactly like your former dog you will feel some sort of happiness
@MissingPiece888
I'm really sorry for your loss :(. I understand how hard losing a pet can be; I've been through the same feelings you're going through <3 It's almost like... well no, it's EXACTLY like losing a family member. Know that you gave him the best life a dog could have.
@MissingPiece888 Hello, I am so sorry to hear about your precious dog :( I know how it feels to lose a pet… it is absolutely heartbreaking. Me and my families first ever dog died as well some years ago and I’ve never been the same since. He was going outside to use the bathroom on the dirt and the person ran over him and didn’t even stop.
Sending prayers and warm hugs your way. Please try to stay strong. 🥺🤍🤍
