Uh, h-hello. Wow, this is a big audience.

*coughs*

 

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is JLantern. My fellow 7Cups peers call me JLantern, Lantern, Lanty, JL, J, and Stormageddon Dark Lord of All. However, they seem to be very hesitant about the last one.

I am a college student studying Computer Science & Biology with a minor in Creative Writing. Yes, it is a very odd combination.

I have many dreams and aspirations, but most of them are small. The one that tends to surprise people the most is my third favorite one: TAKE OVER THE WORLD.

They call me crazy because of that, but each to their own, eh? I figured that my knowledge of Biology and ability to communicate through a written medium combined with my prowess in technology from my Computer Science degree will allow me to create a powerful cyborg army. To be frank, though, I'd rather retire this notion of world domination and live my life as an author; I'll give up this psychotic ideation of mine.

Now that the world can rest easy knowing that I won't conquer it, I shall end my hefty bio by acknowledging my lovely listener twin, CallmeButterfly. She's pretty cool and stuff <3

Awesome listening skills.He made my day.Many people are kind and mean well,but don't know exactly how to make you feel listened to,which is ok,but it's amazing when you find someone who is also talented.I loved that he was an active listener.He rephrased my words,to check if he'd gotten the right meaning,and gave the impression of actually being invested in my story.I felt that I had an audience that gave positive feedback and that made me feel comfortable to continue.I have social anxiety and it's usually hard to connect to people,but in this person's case it was easy.In addition to the active listening,there was good timing.Many people reply too soon or too late.Here I had time to write a long paragraph,but got a response almost immediately,and a warm prompting to continue.That's essential for me,because then there is not time to grow afraid or to get embarrassed by what you just said.Third good thing is politeness.It doesn't matter if you really like the person you're talking to,but it's very important to make them feel as if you do and they're worth talking to,which this guy did.So all these made for a very pleasant and enlightening conversation(I had no idea what I was going to say,but I felt comfortable so I found my words easily,even if it was the first time discussing the problem) Plus another good thing that made me feel at ease were the beginning and end.It makes you happy when you're invited to chat again,or when you're saluted warmly.They're small things,but for a socially anxious and awkward person,every small detail makes a difference and can turn a potentially stressful experience into a good one.Thank you!

Life experience is not the key to being a great listener. Empathy is.

JLantern offers the patience and empathy to try to understand my situation. Even if he/ she did not have a solution for me, he/ she gave a series of prompting questions which enabled me to unravel the solutions to my problem. And I am grateful for that.

JLantern is by far one of the best listener that I have come across!
