Sleeping too much could be a sign of depression. Because of the nature of depression, the lack of motivation causes the brain to produce chemicals that send signals to the body to sleep. It could also be a sign of stress. The body uses sleep as a recovery. Because stress is seen as an “illness” to the brain, signals are sent throughout the body to sleep in order to recover. Sleeping too much could also just simply mean you are becoming sick or you are over working yourself. But it can also be the product of medical conditions, so if you are sleeping so much that it impacts your day negatively, seeing your doctor is a good idea.

It can be very tempting to oversleep. Especially if you’re comfy! But sometimes it can be detrimental for your mental and physical wellbeing. There have been times where I have overslept and woke up feeling more tired than I was before I fell asleep! Oversleeping can mean a number of things. Physically, it could hint at fatigue which is a symptom of many health issues and mentally it could be an indicator of depression and a number of other mental disorders. Sleep is vital and quality of sleep can affect your whole day. Sometimes a lie in can be nice, but avoid sleeping for longer than is necessary.

In my personal experience, sleeping can be used as a way to avoid things and can become a real behavior issue/ bad habit. But it could also be due to, obviously, less exercise and unhealthy eating, as well as a change in your routine or increase in stress. A mixture of all of these or just one of these at an impactful strength can contribute to oversleeping. To address the elephant in the room, depressive disorders and depressive symptoms are something shown to greatly affect your sleeping patterns, as well as other symptoms of things that are disturbing your mind. Sleeping too much can be as unhealthy as sleeping too little.

Sleeping a lot more suddenly is linked to depression, but if your just growing up, expect it to happen as the older you get the more you sleep. If you do end up suddenly feel the need to sleep more or less, it might be depression and you should double check how often you've felt hopeless sad, or unwanted. If you don't have depression, then it's 100% normal as you are just growing up, especially if your in your teens/preteens. Here's what sleep foundation thinks: The most common causes of excessive sleepiness are insufficient sleep, changes to sleep schedule, and sleep disorders like sleep apnea. But if you experience sleepiness on a regular basis, it's important to work with your doctor to rule out some of the other less common causes of sleepiness. I hoped that helped!

Whenever I have slept too much I was battling depression or exhaustion as a mom of 3 and working full time along with being a full time student. Somedays it built up so much that my body would just shut down and say "You need to rest, please get some sleep". I have found personally that if I put myself on a schedule and establish healthy sleep routines (turning off the TV, silencing my cell phone, putting on soothing music) these helped with getting the proper amount of rest to be able to manage my busy life. Because of practicing Sleep Hygiene I now have stopped oversleeping all together and feel better emotionally and physically.

There are many things that sleeping too much can mean. Firstly though, it's important to understand that it's quite possible that "too much" isn't really too much at all, it could just mean that you need the sleep. One reason for sleeping for longer periods of time than you would normally is if you're exercising more than you previously have. And in the same train of thought, if you're working really hard either at school or work (or both) then you might just be so exhausted that you need that extra recovery time, either mentally or physically. That's not necessarily sleeping too much, just what your body needs at this point in time, either because you're pushing yourself harder than before or because you're pushing yourself too much. Which is the next option - you're exhausted because you're overworking yourself and therefore you need that time to once again, recover. If it's the only downtime you have, then of course you're going to sleep longer. However, if these things don't seem to be ringing true, but you have been feeling down/sad/hopeless/heavy/empty/etc then your sleep might be increased by depression or something of the sort. Often our moods have a big impact on how we sleep and so that's a possibility as well.

Sleeping too much can indicate depression or other stress related disorders. It can indicated an inability to cope with current stressors and the person may be feeling too tired to just deal with anything in life. There can also be a pathophysiological component to it where the person may be sick. Sleeping too much requires a person to seek professional and medical help because it can indicate underlying medical problems. I would advise someone to seek medical or professional help to really find out what is the reason behind their need to be sleeping too much, as it is not healthy.
