Perhaps this is the first time where you really, truly care about something. Some things are just valued by you more than others. Thus, theorectically, when this thing you value changes due to unpredictable life circumstances, you would express a lot of sadness from this loss.

Sadness can be affected by many reasons. Situational isn't technically one but it is to me. Thats the most difficult to get past for me. Other depressive character flaws need help through experts because it typically doesn't just go away.

Sadness can come from any number of things such as not enough protein in your diet, too much or not enough sugar, dehydration. If you have other symptoms you should see your doctor.
Sometimes people experience great sadness on or about the anniversary of something from their past, like the death of a loved one, a bad experience but usually it disappears once you realize what it is.
Did you get turned down for something lately that you said you didn't really care about? It could be that subconsciously you did care for some reason such as not getting promoted instead of the person who did, you didn't get to go on a trip you would have appreciated.
Recognizing what is bothering you can help you let it go and move on in peace.

I have parts of me that no one knows. I constantly beat myself up. I don't do enough, I can't do it right, I can't except complements because no matter what I don't think it's true.

I am really sorry that you feel really sad. There really isn't a right answer I can give you for why you feel so sad. Is there something in your current life that has changed? Are you missing someone? Is it you are lonely? Maybe these questions can be a start for you maybe to think a bit. Good luck and don't be so hard on yourself.

There are usually reasons what you feel this way. these reasons are not always easy to understand because they might come from what is happening in your life now, or they might come from the past. That is why one usually needs to get some input from a support group or a therapist to begin to understand what is happening and what it is happening now.
