I think one can cause the other. It's easier to be good to other people when you're just starting out. Be honest with people, but be cautious with thoughts that may offend others. Do things for others that you would like people to do for you, whether that's helping them with a difficult task, talking to them about their problems, or just making them laugh. It doesn't have to be huge gestures but every little bit counts. Eventually, the good you do for other people will reflect on the good you do for yourself. You will find that you are more confident and accepting of yourself as you learn to accept and appreciate others.

Respect, honesty, and communication are a great foundation for any kind of relationship, whether it be with yourself or others. Always really listen to yourself, or others, acknowledge what you really need or what others are literally saying. Be kind to yourself and to others, people make mistakes and most people are at least well-intentioned. Similarly, give yourself a break: it's okay to Just Stop now and then and relax without pressuring yourself. Know when to give up with other people: persistence shows a lack of respect and listening skills. Treat yourself and others: go on a walk, a nice restaurant, do something you really enjoy just for the sake of it.

I think a way to be good to yourself is to list a few positive traits that you have and list things you are grateful for. Being good to others can be as easy as a friendly smile or forgiving someone for something that may have offended or hurt you and sending them positive wishes in their life.
