In my mind, isolation is a state you are in, either because you somehow isolate yourself, or you are isolated due to circumstance. Loneliness is a feeling and it is related to isolation but not completely. Loneliness is not having anyone there that can make you feel understood. So there is an overlap with isolation because it is affected by not having people around, but you can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely.

Yes, you can be/feel lonely without being isolated. You can even feel lonely when surrounded by people at the same time. Loneliness has merely to do with lacking the feeling of true connection with others and/or not being accepted/understood by others. Isolation can cause loneliness, but is not the only cause or reason.

You can be lonely and surrounded by people. When you’re isolated, however, you haven’t got anyone to turn to.

Isolation is a choice we make and loneliness is also a choice by us or by others. I will give an example how I relate this to my life. I don't like parties especially drinks party so I isolate myself from my friends whenever my friends invite me with them. This is by choice. Sometimes when I'm sad I don't have anyone to share how I feel? and then I feel lonely. If none of my friends listen to me when I have some thing to say they make me feel lonely. That's it
Have a helpful insight? Don’t keep it to yourself.
Sharing helps others and its therapeutic for you.
