I wake up upset mostly because of the time I wake up. I wake up knowing that I have a 1 hour bus ride to go to school, and that leaves me really angry. But, sometimes, I wake up upset because of my dreams, that are flashbacks of traumatic experiences. It's rare for me to wake up fine...

It may be that you had a dream that was emotionally upsetting, it could be that you didn't sleep well or woke up at a bad moment or woke up because something woke you, which made your body activate your fight or flight responses.

the mind keeps thinking and exploring while you sleep as well, even though you might not remember these contemplations when you wake up. these thoughts might be bringing you to sad results while you sleep. another reason might be the lack of certain hormones being released which leave you feeling sad.

I wake up feeling upset when I let my anxious thoughts spiral out of control. Oftentimes I am able to control these thought cascades through tools I have learned and continue to practice, but there are moments when only time will calm my head.
