I can't 100% answer that, without knowing the situation personally. But maybe there's the feeling that something is going to go wrong and ruin what's going great, so your brain is making you think you need to shut yourself down before you get used to it and get hurt.

There are many causes for depression, and not all of them are obvious. Chemical imbalances. Hormones. Stress. Sometimes it's hard to recognize stress. Sometimes we don't realize something really bothers us until we take the time to stop and think about absolutely everything going on with our lives. Are we fulfilled? Are we truly getting what we need out of all aspects of life? Answering those questions often helps us realize why we feel depressed, and can often lead us to figuring out how to move past it.

Your life going great does not equal that you are happy. It doesn't reflect to what's inside your mind, it's only an environmental factor. If we look deeper into this, depression is often caused by something that has happened in your life or it can be caused by an outside factor. Depression does not reflect the true you, it prevents you from being your actual self. A lot of people suffer from depression and it's unique for everyone since we are individuals but gladly there are ways to treat it. For some it goes away by itself, for some an environmental change is needed to happen. Just remember that even if your life is going generally great, it's possible for you not to feel great and that is definitely not impossible and it shouldn't make you feel that you have no right to feel depressed because depression tries to tell us that something is not okay with our lives the way it is right now. Also, know that you don't have to suffer from this. There are people who are there to help you, for you and we all deserve to feel happy.

I understand this completely; my life is wonderful, and many would kill to be in my shoes, there are a lot of people who are in need of things that I'm so easily given. However, sometimes either loneliness creeps up on us or we feel we could do better, sometimes it's just there to be there. Depression doesn't need a reason to lurk within you; it doesn't have to validate itself. You could feel lonely, depressed, and even anxiety as a person who, considerably, has the best life in the world. It could be hormones, unresolved conflict, disassociation, or even denial that your life may not be as great as you think it is. It could, possibly, even be that you can't pinpoint the problem and it's just there to be there; none of which is something you should feel terrible over. Sometimes things in our life surprise us and linger even though we don't want or need them there.

As a medical student I routinely feel symptoms of depression that I am not smart enough, I am not good enough, or I mistakenly was accepted to my medical program. Ostensibly it seems I am on track for a great life, but internally I often times feel like an imposter. This brings a lot of negative emotions into my life. It's easy to always feel short of greatness even when you may actually be in the thick of it. I have now started journaling and making lists of positive qualities about myself. This reminds me of the positive things others value in me and helps me feel self confident. We tend to focus on our flaws and obsess about them so much that we forget what makes us unique and a joy to be around. Next time I have a moment when I feel depressed, I will not resist the feeling. Rather, I will analyze why I'm feeling this way and go to my journal to remind myself that I'm much more than just a negative feeling. I've achieved a lot and truly mean it when I say, "I'm confident!"

Often times depression isn't linked to anything going on externally. It's sometimes internal in nature. Take some time to explore your feelings and see what might be bothering you not related to current events.
