The reason for you not doing things will probably make it clear, if you're a lazy person your reasoning for being unmotivated is usually just because you "can't be bothered" and that only. However if you're depressed it'll be more like "is there really a point" and you start to question why you'd want to do something and probably relate those reasons for not doing it with something negative about yourself. For example if you're unmotivated to go to the cinema and watch a film for go out and play a sport you might think something along the lines of "is there any point no one really wants me there". You could just not be bothered because you're depressed since you don't usually care about much when you're depressed but somehow I hope this has helped and just try your best not to be lazy if that's something negative you see about yourself.

Well, usually if you are depressed you may be unmotivated by things you used to love. If you are lazy, you probably would only be unmotivated to do things you didn't particularly enjoy. If you still enjoy life and like sleeping or relaxing, and therefore can't feel unmotivated, then you are probably being a bit lazy. But that's okay, I'm a lazy person myself! :)

Depression can show up in ways we don't expect—and sometimes, if we've been living with the symptoms long enough, we can assume it's your version of normal. If you're concerned that this might be an issue, consult a professional to evaluate what you might need to help you!

It may mean you are depressed if recent events have happened that might make you sad. If your feeling particularly sad about anything it might mean you are depressed, and not just feeling lazy.

Collect your feelings, and evaluate them- do you hate talking to to people, or do you hate the thought of putting up the effort towards it? Think about things like that.

Chances are if you really have the wish to do more and you're genuinely trying but still falling short or unable to make things happen, it's not just laziness. With laziness there's a real, 'I just can't be bothered' energy to it. A lack of motivation is a possibility but if you're being affected in other ways, such as your mood, distancing yourself from others, struggling to get out of bed or face the day, an apathetic outlook on life, when things you once enjoyed or were excited by are no longer of interest, depression is worth considering. I can't remember who said this, but a celebrity mentioned that he realised he was depressed cause he was walking down the road and witnessed a bad car collision and it didn't spark a reaction in him. I think you know, deep down, if you're just lazy or unmotivated. Depression is debilitating.

I believe it has a lot to do with attitude. If you are having a desire to do something, but you feel hurt that you feel as if you can't get it accomplished or like you don't know where to even begin.... then you may be battling some depression. If you are wanting and desiring something to be done or to accomplish something new, but don't genuinely care if it happens in your life anytime soon or not. You probably feel it doesn't actively effect you, you may just need some motivation and self commitment to push yourself to do it.

When you have depression, you won't feel like doing things even if you love them. You'll avoid any activity that'll involve meeting people and things like that. You'll procrastinate even on things you love. It's very different from laziness, where you just don't want to do things you dislike. When I had depression, I disliked literally everything. I couldn't even do things I liked like cooking and drawing. I couldn't even wake up in the morning and I had poor appetite. I know it's not easy but stay strong, and believe in yourself. Don't keep your feelings to yourself. Consulting a professional is a good idea if you think you may be depressed.
