I know how you are feeling. Sometimes the best thing is to let go and I know it’s hard but you have to think about what you want and if you can see a future with him. If he makes you happy then I’d say give it another go and see how things go. You can only try and see how things go. It takes a long time for that feeling of missing and letting go but sometimes it is for the better. It is so so hard at the time but in the future you will be happy that this is what you have done. You have to do whatever makes you happy.

You feel that you do not have a future with him and you did break up with him. You also do care a lot about him and want to patch things up between you two. That can be really tricky mixing the feelings of caring for him and seeing a future together. I suggest you give yourself some time and try working things out as friends. If you two are not working out in a romantic relationship, you could still be really good friends. If he doesn’t want that or it doesn’t go well, let it go. You deserve someone who meets your needs.

I think giving a shot to reengagement is well worth it. Take things slow, have realistic expectations, and checking in with yourself can help. If we choose not to reengage we may be left with regret later. This can be hard to get rid of. As long as the situation is one that you feel is safe you don't have much risk in trying again. It is normal to still have strong feelings towards an old partner, especially if the breakup is recent. Exploring these emotions helps us ensure that we made a good decision. Every situation is unique though and only you know all the details about why things ended.
