Understanding the Problem of Cliques

Put on the moderator's shoes tight, for we are going to hear an important problem: the problem of cliques!

Cliques are what we call a group of members who have formed very close friendships and communicate exclusively with each other. They can create a difficult situation if they monopolise the chat and exclude others. As a moderator, you can use general reminders to be inclusive and then steer the conversation forward.

Example response:

✦ “It’s great to see that so many of you know each other, let’s make sure we include everyone and get to know some of our new users.”
