According to the ICD-11, burnout is defined as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.”

Some dimensions and symptoms of burnout include:

  • Feelings of energy depletion. This includes emotional exhaustion and other physical symptoms such as headaches.
  • Increased mental distance from one’s job. Feelings of being detached from one’s job or having negative thoughts regarding one’s role is a symptom. You may feel that your motivation levels have been impacted, leading to helplessness.
