Understanding Burnout and its Symptoms

According to the ICD-11, burnout is defined as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.”
Some dimensions and symptoms of burnout include:
- Feelings of energy depletion. This includes emotional exhaustion and other physical symptoms such as headaches.
- Increased mental distance from one’s job. Feelings of being detached from one’s job or having negative thoughts regarding one’s role is a symptom. You may feel that your motivation levels have been impacted, leading to helplessness.
- Reduced professional efficacy. This also impacts self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.
